    • Automatic packaging apparatus and methods for packaging food products such as bacon in evacuated or gas-filled packages. The disclosed machine is capable of convexly thermoforming two webs of packaging material into respective sets of pockets which are brought together in opposed positions to enclose the product. One preferred package made by the disclosed techniques comprises a transparent semi-rigid cup-like shell and a back-formed flexible film sealed over the shell opening. In operation of the disclosed machine, the product is loaded into the semi-rigid package shell from below, so that the upper sides of the product as introduced into the machine are pressed up against the inside surface of the shell, and after evacuation are held in that position by atmospheric pressure acting through the flexible film beneath the product. Thus, such upper sides of the product are visible through the transparent shell which serves as the display side of the package.

    • A sealed package comprising a cup-shaped container of relatively heavy-gauge, semi-rigid (form-retaining) plastic, with a protective member of relatively stiff material over the opening. Between the container and the protective member is a hermetic sealing closure member in the form of a relatively thin (flexible) plastic film secured around the rim of the cup. The package interior is evacuated and atmospheric pressure stretches the flexible film into the cup to engage the packaged article(s) across the full width thereof, i.e., up to the side walls of the cup. A relatively rigid and planar paper board sheet overlies the flexible film and is secured thereto by an adhesive stronger than the bond between the flexible film and the semi-rigid cup.

    • An anti-short bushing, for use between a tubular metal sheath and an electrical conductor carried within the metal sheath, comprising a tubular insulative unit configured to be inserted between the sheath and the conductor. The tubular insulative unit is formed as a single molded piece having three connected segments. Two of the segments are generally semi-cylindrical and each has a shoulder projecting radially therefrom at one end. The two segments are connected by an elongated hinge which permits them to be folded relative to one another to form a tubular configuration with their shoulders forming a partial circumferential shoulder.     • This invention provides apparatus and a method for forming, filling, sealing and cutoff of a package in which a thermoform film rigid bottom member is formed in a forming station adjustably positioned on a base. A loading station and a sealing station like the forming station, also adjustably positioned, are also provided. Both the forming and sealing stations have an adjusting guide means in which the roll supply is carried on a tubular support and the guides are carried on a hingedly secured threaded rod. The lower film and sealing cover as a strip are advanced by edge clamp means, with a first pair of clamps adjustably positioned and carried by a support and a second pair of clamps adjustably positioned on a support reciprocably moved along slide rails by a rotary actuator with an actuated drag link and crank arm. The acceleration and deceleration are produced by the drag link and alternate clamping and unclamping of the strip by valve means.

    • There is shown an inking apparatus for stamping on a localized area, and with a speedy application, a selected reproduction to a travelling or advanced product. This inking roller is free-turning with a light brake to prevent free wheeling. A four-bar linkage is used with two eccentrics. One eccentric is preferably rotated with at least twice the revolutions of the other eccentric. The four-bar linkage carries on an extending end of a first bar the stamp which is moved into peripheral engagement of the inking roller and then to the surface of the product. The movement of the stamp is in a path prescribed by the eccentrics and the four-bar linkage. The stamp in its peripheral engagement with the inking roller causes said roller to be inched forward rotationally to present a fresh surface to the stamp when next brought to the inking roller.

    • This invention includes apparatus providing for continuous motion and constant velocity to a traveling web usually including at least one film. A pair of grippers are arranged to grasp the film and are alternately actuated to advance the web. Each of the grippers are carried on the distal end of a reciprocated member. A motor is connected to a first shaft to turn four sprockets carried thereon. Each sprocket engages a roller chain assembly arranged in an endless manner and disposed to be moved in an oblong path. The roller chains are moved in a reciprocable path by one of a pair of crank arms driving and moving Pitman arms connected thereto. The oblong roller chains are operatively connected to and move lever arms pivotally connected to drag links which in turn move the reciprocated members. The apparatus includes a crank arm, a Pitman arm, drag links and reciprocable member with each as an assembly moved one hundred eighty degrees out-of-phase with a like assembly. The reciprocable movement of the frame carrying the oblong roller chains lengthens the forward stroke and shortens the rearward stroke while the speed of the roller chain remains constant. An overlap of the gripper actuation is provided by reciprocably moving the frame carrying the roller chain while moving the roller chain at a constant speed.
