    • A building panel for exterior and interior wall and roof surfaces comprises an elongated body formed of relatively thin, molded hardboard having upper and lower edges, opposite ends, an outer face adapted for exposure to the weather and a back face generally following the contour thereof. The body includes a lower edge portion extending upwardly and outwardly of the lower edge of the panel and integralling joining an intermediate fascia portion spaced outwardly of the lower edge. An upper edge portion integrally joins an upper edge of the intermediate fascia portion and includes an upwardly and outwardly extending segment adapted to underlie a lower edge portion of a panel(s) laid up in a next higher course. The upper edge portion also includes a second segment extending between the first segment and the upper edge of the panel and this second segment is generally parallel of the intermedate fascia panel portion and is adapted to underlie a portion of an intermediate fascia portion of a panel(s) laid up in a next higher course. The upper edge portion is formed with a plurality of longitudinally spaced apart, fastener receiving depressions extending inwardly of an outer face of the second segment of the upper edge portion. Longitudinally extending slot means are cut through the thin molded hardboard in the depressions between the inner and outer faces for receiving the shank of a nail or other fastener for securing the panels in place.

    • A building panel for exterior and interior wall and roof surface includes an elongated body formed of a relatively thin walled, molded hardboard material having upper and lower edges, opposite ends, an outer weather face adapted to resemble the profiles historical or traditional siding and shingle shapes and a back face generally contoured to match the outer surface. The body includes a lower edge portion extending upwardly and outwardly of the lower edge of the panel which joins an intermediate fascia portion spaced outwardly of the lower edge. An elongated fastener receiving strip is formed along an upper edge of the intermediate fascia portion and includes a plurality of longitudinally spaced apart fastener receiving depressions integrally molded therein. The strip has a machined back face and the machine cut intersects an outer face of the panel around the depressions thereby forming an open slot extending completely through the panel in each depression for receiving a fastener shank for securing the building panel on a building structure. An upper edge portion of the panel joins an upper edge of the fastener receiving strip and includes an upwardly and outwardly extending first segment adapted to underlie a lower edge portion of a panel laid up in a next higher course in a building wall structure. The upper edge portion also includes a second segment which extends between the first segment and the upper edge of the panel, generally parallel of the intermediate fascia portion and adapted to underlie a portion of the fascia portion of the panel laid up in the next higher course.

    • A shingle having a headlap section and a buttlap section with at least one portion of the buttlap section having a relatively uniform color and another portion of the buttlap section having a color gradient or gradation from light to dark. An illusion of depth or thickness is created on the portion of the buttlap section having the color gradient. The buttlap section defines in part the exposed weather surface of the associated shingle. The relatively uniform color portions may be formed on tabs or dragon teeth and the color gradient formed on a backer sheet disposed beneath the tabs. Openings between adjacent tabs expose the color gradient to view. A plurality of horizontal striations may be used to establish the desired color gradient from light to dark. The amount of tone and contrast may be selected to create the desired illusion of depth or thickness. The amount of contrast may be varied depending upon the color selected for each shingle. The number of horizontal striations and their width may also be varied to provide the desired color gradient.
