    • An improved collapsible spreader with a spread rate selection mechanism including a knob and a rotatable cup-shaped structure. The cup-shaped structure includes an elongated setting tab and a thirty-six step edge corresponding to thirty-six spread rate settings on the knob. Operatively engaged with the cup-shaped structure is an abutment tab that is part of a closure structure for blocking and selectively unblocking a hopper opening. The tab engages the setting tab to define the adjustable length of the closure structure. Thereafter, abutment rate selection is a function of the rotatable position of the cup-shaped structure. Engagement of the abutment tab and a step defines the size of the hopper opening and thus the amount of product released from the hopper during operation. The spreader also includes a dual spring arrangement to bias the closure structure to a closed position and to prevent breakage. The disclosed spreader also features a one piece wheel to reduce parts and assembly costs.

    • A hand held spreader having the bottom-face of the hopper portion at an angle with respect of the horizontal and having the handle for holding the device disposed directly below the hopper and so directly below the weight of the hopper; the handle is angled so as to afford an in-line action between the trigger of the handle and the slide of a dispensing mechanism, thus avoiding any requirement or a linkage between the trigger and the slide mechanism. Also the gear-box portion of the device is of a simple clam-shell design that allows the rotary drive shaft of the device to be removably supported on opposite sides of its load bearing section by means of bearing supports on both sides of at least one of the gears. The supports are part of the separate halves of the housing itself, thus avoiding the need for additional or separate bearing structures. A rotor disc is also provided having blade members strategically disposed thereon in a manner that avoids interference with the deposition of material on the surface of the disc.

    • The invention provides an easily assembled connector for handle sections of a wheeled appliance in which the connector is formed from a plastic having an agressive memory for enabling a pair of opposed tab members thereon formed from the same material to cooperate with respective apertures in the handle members to be joined or connected. The handle members are slip-fitted the one onto the other with the connector occupying a reinforcing position on the inside surface of the end of the innermost handle member in one embodiment and, according to another embodiment in which the connector housing comprises two half portions, joins the handle members in an abutting relationship. In this latter embodiment both halves of the connector are additionally provided with rib portions which facilitate sliding movement of the connector within the interior surface of the respective handle members; also, one half of the connector has slightly higher rib portions than the other half, so that the higher-ribbed half then becomes that part of the connector which requires a press fit into one of the handle members, this last fit intended to be performed at the factory.
