    • A shoulder coil of the present invention includes a generally ring-shaped transverse housing oriented in a vertical plane with a parallel wound solenoid supported therein. Annular anterior and posterior housings are mounted diametric on said transverse housing and perpendicularly thereto, and have antenna loops supported therein. The anterior and posterior housings are preferably mounted in planes which diverge downwardly at an angle of approximately 30.degree. from parallel to one another. The transverse housing is a generally cylindrical shaped strap having opposite side edges, with the lower half of the transverse housing folded such that the side edges are abutting to form a joined edge. The anterior, posterior, and transverse housing are preferably formed of a resilient semi-flexible plastic material with the loop antennas and solenoid embedded therein such that the housings may be manipulated and formed to provide a garment-like fit on the shoulder of a patient.

    • A whole volume shoulder coil for MRI includes two opposed coils one attached by a knuckle held captive in a sliding track to provide bounded translation rotation and angling of that coil with respect to the opposed coil. The coil position may be fixed by means of a single adjustment which clamps the knuckle against the track. The coils includes fusible links separated from the coil by a current divider which also serves to detune the coil when the fuse is opened. Varactor diodes are used to tune the coil. The DC control voltage for the diodes is combined with the signal from the coil and later separated by tuned filters to reduce cabling.

    • A NMR liver coil includes an anterior housing supporting a plurality of NMR coils pivotally connected to a posterior housing supporting a NMR coil. The anterior housing is curved from a generally horizontal upper end to a generally vertical lower end, and pivotally connected to a generally vertically oriented flange forming the upper end of the posterior housing. The posterior housing is curved from the forward to the rearward end to conform to the curvature of a conventional NMR patient table, with the flange curving rearwardly and upwardly from the upper end of the posterior housing. The anterior housing is operably and pivotally connected to the posterior housing about a pair of pivotal axes, such that pivotal movement about a first pivotal axis will permit movement of the anterior housing from a working position with the anterior housing upper end oriented generally horizontally over the posterior housing, to an open position with the upper end of the anterior housing generally vertical. Pivotal movement about the second pivotal axis permits adjustability of the anterior housing within the working position, varying the distance between the anterior housing upper end and posterior housing to permit various patient sizes between the anterior and posterior housings.

    • A whole volume neck coil for MRI includes an anterior and posterior saddle coil, the latter attached to a base. The anterior coil is held in an open framework, hinged against an extension tower attached to the base. The hinge axis is angled to the medial axis to provide greater entry area for the patient's head and shoulders. The extension tower also provides adjustment of the anterior coil toward and away from the base by means of a sliding carriage attached to the extension tower. The coils are passively decoupled from the RF excitation field by means of back-to-back diodes which insert a "pole" forming network into the coils. A method of calculating the values of the network components is taught that accounts for significant diode junction capacitance.

    • An MRI antenna array including a housing and a substrate, antenna elements and circuitry encapsulated by the housing. The housing, antenna elements, and substrate are flexible to allow the housing to distort in three dimensions to closely conform to contours of a patient. The antenna elements are mounted to the substrate in a manner that permits each element to maintain a desired resonance when the housing is distorted in three dimensions. The circuitry is electrically coupled with the antenna elements to maintain tuning and isolation of the elements when the housing is distorted in three dimensions. The housing, antenna elements, and substrate may be elastic to allow the housing to be worn by a plurality of different sized patients so that the housing is in close contact with the patient and conforms to contours of the patient.
