摘要： A NiAl intermetallic alloy and article is provided with improved high temperature strength, particularly stress rupture strength, through the generation of a multiphase microstructure comprising a beta matrix and at least one precipitate phase. The strength properties and microstructure are the result of alloying with at least two elements selected from Ga, Hf, and optionally Ti, Zr, Ta, Nb, and V, in defined ranges. Preferred are at least two of the elements Ga, Hf, and Ti, and specifically preferred are all three. A specifically preferred form of the invention, in atomic percent, is about 45-59% Ni, about 0.02-0.5% Ga, about 0.2 to less than 1% Hf, about 0.1-10% Ti, with the balance A1 and incidental impurities.

NiAl nickel aluminide intermetallics alloyed with no more than about 5 atomic percent of additional elements have significantly improved room temperature ductility over conventional unalloyed beta phase nickel aluminides or beta phase nickel aluminides alloyed with higher percentages of additional elements. The NiAl nickel aluminide comprises, in atomic percent, at least 50% nickel, about 0.01% to about 0.25% yttrium, about 0 to about 0.15% gallium, about 0.05% to about 4% of an element selected from the group consisting of chromium, molybdenum and combinations thereof, and balance from about 40% to about 49.85% aluminum and trace impurities.

A pulse of coherent laser energy is directed to the coated portion of the solid material to create a shockwave. Advantageously, at least a portion of the unspent energy-absorbing overlay can be reused in situ at a further laser treatment location and/or recovered for later use.

摘要： An environmental coating and a method for forming the coating on a nickel aluminide component designed for use in a hostile thermal environment, such as turbine, combustor and augmentor components of a gas turbine engine. The environmental coating includes a metal that has been diffused into the surface of the nickel aluminide component, and an aluminum oxide layer on the surface of the nickel aluminide component. According to this invention, the metal is one or more noble metals, chromium and/or an MCr alloy, and forms a diffusion region comprising noble metal-aluminides and/or chromium-aluminides. The environmental coating optionally contains up to about 1.0 atomic percent of at least one oxygen-active element, such as yttrium, hafnium, zirconium and/or cerium. According to the invention, the environmental coating need only consist of the diffusion region and the aluminum oxide layer, and therefore does not require additional environmentally-resistant layers (e.g., diffusion aluminides or MCrAlY coatings) to protect the underlying nickel aluminide substrate.
