    • Herein is disclosed a method and apparatus for reducing particle collection on a slider or gimbal tongue. The gimbal tongue is shaped so as to interact with airflow within a disc drive to direct particles away from the slider and gimbal tongue. The leading edge of the gimbal tongue overhangs the leading edge of the slider. As air current approaches such a geometry, a large pocket of slow moving, high pressure air is created just upwind of the slider. Thus, as particulate matter encounters this pocket, the matter is slowed and its momentum is partially dissipated. A vent is provided in the gimbal tongue. The vent permits an escape route for the particles to move to an area of lower pressure, located on the other side of the gimbal tongue.

    • A disk drive system includes a base, a disk stack rotatably attached to the base, and an actuator assembly movably attached to the base. A ramp assembly includes a set of ramps for loading and unloading the sliders and transducing elements carried by the sliders to and from the disks in the disk stack. The ramp assembly is attached to the base. An actuator assembly is movably attached to the base of the disk drive. The actuator assembly moves the load springs and attached slider and transducers to various positions on the disk. The slider is a block of material having corners and edges. Sliders have a backside surface and an air-bearing surface. The slider also has at least one recess therein. One or more pads of shock absorbing material are positioned within at least one of the recesses in the slider. The pads are positioned within one or more recesses to prevent the corners or edges of the block of material near the air-bearing surface from contacting the disk. In one embodiment, the pads are positioned within the recesses so that the second material is positioned near the air-bearing surface. The pads include a first shock absorbing material, and a second material harder than the shock absorbing material. The second material can be diamond like carbon. After forming the pad, diamond like carbon is deposited on the pad using photolithography.

    • A head gimbal assembly (HGA) for use in a forward flow disc drive includes a load beam having a longitudinal axis, a gimbal, a slider, and an air deflector. The gimbal is mounted to a distal end of the load beam. The slider includes a transducing head and is mounted to a disc side of the gimbal and is aligned with the longitudinal axis of the load beam. The air deflector includes a first deflecting member that is positioned upstream of the slider relative to a forward airflow. The air deflector extends from a disc side of either the distal end of the load beam or the gimbal and across the longitudinal axis. The air deflector deflects a portion of the forward airflow away from the slider to thereby reduce windage induced off-track motion of the transducing head.

    • A system for keeping the imperfectly machined surfaces of bearings apart at rest. The system includes a first bearing surface which moves facing a second bearing surface, the first surface having a distribution of discrete diamond-like carbon (DLC) pads deposited upon an adhesion layer. The DLC pads are at a height which is approximately the height of the roughness or imperfections of the surfaces. The pads are distributed over the surface at approximately three pads to forty pads or more per square inch. The pads keep the bearing surfaces from coming in contact. Also disclosed is a hydrodynamic bearing having a thrust plate having hydrodynamic grooves and DLC pads on a thrust surface, and a rotor member having an end facing the thrust plate, and a ball and socket bearing having DLC pads deposited on either the socket surface or ball surface.
