摘要： An optical scanner for reading two-dimensional indicia such as bar code symbols and the like includes a scan element arranged to create a two-dimensional raster pattern which may be scanned across the indicia to be read. In order to improve linearity of response in the vertical direction, perpendicular to the direction of the scan lines, the scan element is driven in that direction by a modified triangle waveform in which the amplitude and/or the phase of at least one of the harmonics has been altered. A scanning synchronization signal is provided by a long thin photodetector which is swept by the scanning beam at the left hand end of each scan path. This enables reading of vertically-modulated bar code symbologies such as POSTNET and PostBar.

摘要： An optical scanner such as a bar code scanner includes a segmented fold mirror, the individual sections of which have different profiles. By directing the scanning laser beam across the fold mirror, a plurality of scan lines are created, at different distances from the scanner. This provides increased flexibility by extending the scanner's working range. In alternative embodiments, a collector mirror and/or a scanning mirror may be segmented. In addition, beam shaping may be provided by reflecting the beam from one or more aplanar surfaces.

摘要： An ambient illumination shielding apparatus for an imaging-based scanner adapted to read direct part marking (DPM) bar codes. The shielding apparatus includes an illumination shield extending from a housing of the scanner and extending along at least a portion of a path of travel of an aiming pattern generated by an aiming apparatus of the scanner. The shield passes illumination within a predetermined wavelength range and impedes passage of illumination outside of the predetermined wavelength range. The predetermined wavelength range of the shield includes a wavelength range of the aiming pattern generated by the aiming apparatus. The shielding apparatus further includes a filter disposed in proximity to an imaging system of the scanner and passing illumination within a predetermined wavelength range to the pixel array and impeding the passage of illumination outside of the predetermined wavelength range. The predetermined wavelength range of the filter includes a wavelength range of an illumination system of the scanner.

By using the binary image to determine the symbol margins, margins can be located efficiently and in the presence of symbol contrast variation caused by irregularities in the marked surface or light source angles.
