    • 5798. Roche, W. March 10. Index type-wheel machines; machines for embossing paper, leather, fabrics, etc.; hammerimpression arrangements.-Relates to machines for printing or embossing words or phrases on cheques &c., or for embossing leather or fabrics. The machines are of the kind in which the cheque &c. is supported, beneath one or more type-drums, on a table which is slotted to permit of the passage of impression hammers. In the machine shown in Figs. 2 and 4, the type-drum a, bearing longitudinal rows of type on the periphery, may be set by a knob 25 and a pointer b reading over a scale c, the drum being held in set position by a roller 17 mounted on a spring blade 18 and arranged to engage teeth 16 on the drum. The drum is mounted in a casing e, which is hinged at f to a base d and is secured by screws g. The base d supports the table h for carrying the cheque, the impression being made by means of a hammer r which works through a slot t in the table. The impreasion of the cheque may be made directly against the type, or the types may be inked, or an inking-ribbon m 'may be placed between the types and the cheque. The hammer r consists of a plate having a shank y which is mounted in a guide v and is tensioned downwards by a spring x. The hammer is carried by screws 6 mounted in the forked ends 1 of a lever 2 which is pivoted at 3 and formed with a cup 4 to receive a spring plunger 5 having a circular head 11 which is socketed in the boss 9 of the handle 8. The hammer may be levelled and its upward movement limited by adjusting the screws 6, apertures d' being provided in the base to give access to the screws. In the machine shown in Fig. 7, in addition to the type-drum a there is a rotatable type-block 20 bearing on opposite faces 21 the phrases 'Account payee only, not negotiable' and not ' negotiable & Co.,' the block 20 being set by an external pointer and held in set position by a spring 40. The type-drum a is set by an external knob on the axis of the drum and a pointer b which reads over a dial e on the top of the casing, the pointer being connected to the type-drum by bevelgearing 26, 27. To prevent the cheque from being mutilated by the teeth 27, these teeth are formed from separate bars mounted to slide in radial grooves 32, Fig. 11, formed in a disk 33 which is secured to the type-drum a. Each tooth is formed with a recess 34 engaging a ring 35, which is formed on a fixed plate 36 and is set eccentrically with regard to the drum a. The arrangement is such that only the teeth at the upper part of the disk 33 are in engagement with the bevel-wheel 26, the teeth at the lower part being retracted flush with the periphery of the disk. The type-carriers a, 20 co-operate with hammers r, 23, which work through slots in the table h. The hammers are of the interconnected kind, the operating-levers 1, 2 having engaging parts 24, 25 so that, when the handle 8 is depressed to operate the hammer r, the hammer 23 is also operated. According to the Provisional Specification, the levers 1, 2 may be connected by toothed gearing.
