    • A partition control assembly (38) within a continuous-motion automatic packaging machine (2) receives and controls the motion of partitions which are ejected at high speeds from a partition ejection mechanism (50) for insertion between preconfigured groups of articles processed on a flight conveyor (4) in the machine. The partition control assembly includes a first member (58) having a contoured guiding surface (62) for receiving a leading edge of the partition and for guiding the partition into a lateral, downward direction with respect to the partition ejector. Disposed opposite the first member is a second member (56) which includes a control surface (60) disposed opposite the contoured guiding surface, creating an interior control space between the control and contoured guiding surface. The control surface receives the partition upon lateral translation thereof, terminates lateral translation of the partition, and includes an inverted ledge (64) for engaging a top edge of the partition to prevent the partition from recoiling upwardly from within the plurality of preconfigured articles after the partition contacts the flight conveyor.

    • A partition feeder (10) has a multi-rack assembly for holding more than one reserve stack of partitions (14). The partition feeder (10) has a main stack of partitions which is forced against a set of tabs (18) and which has its partitions (14) removed by a selecting apparatus (32). When the main stack has been reduced down past a certain amount, one of the reserve stacks is automatically moved into alignment with the main stack and the partitions (14) in the reserve stack are added to the main stack. The partition feeder (10) has guide rails that are received in notched sides of the partitions, thereby suspending the partitions (14) on the guide rails (12). An inner frame (166), upon which the guide rails (12) are mounted, is adjustably mounted to a middle frame (164) to thereby permit the adjustment of the distance between the guide rails (12). The partition feeder can therefore be easily adjusted for partitions of different sizes.

    • A packaging machine has a partition inserter (32) and selecting apparatus (34) suspended above a flow of articles (8) and mounted to an inner frame (40) which can be raised or lowered to adjust the spacing between the partition inserter and selecting apparatus relative to the articles. The partition inserter and selecting apparatus are mounted to the inner frame on guide rails (43) for lateral displacement to a position over a maintenance deck (90), and are releasably engaged to each other for maintenance access. The packaging machine preferably has three pairs of partition inserters and selecting apparatus suspended over the articles in staggered arrangement, and each pair is accurately positioned to a desired location with a semi-automatic adjustment system.
