    • A volumetric metering pump for accurately dosing small quantities of liquid, in which two interconnected identical parttoroidal pistons are arranged in separate cylinders. Small pulse jerks are simultaneously applied to each piston by a rockable member connected to a step-by-step electric motor, so that one piston draws liquid into its cylinder while the other piston expels liquid from its cylinder. This pistons are thus caused to move along arcuate strokes in the direction of their respective axes. A slide valve is provided firstly to direct liquid from an inlet duct to one cylinder and to an outlet duct from the other cylinder. At the end of each stroke this situation is reversed.

The pump may alternatively be controlled by a motor driving a ratchet wheel device for generating and regulating mechanical impulses to the arm 7. A mechanical, electro-mechanical or electronic speed varying device may be provided for adjusting the time between successive pulses for readily adjusting a dose to a desired value and for covering a wide range of doses. The pump cylinders 5, 6 may, as shown, form parts of the same circle, or, the pump cylinder's partcircular axes may be parallel and coaxial to one another.

Class 97(3) A pair of closed vessels 24, 25 are provided with gas inlet pipes 27, 28 through which gas may be bubbled through a reference liquid contained in the vessels 24, 25, the gas streams then being bubbled through the liquid under investigation in the vessel 20 from pipes 29, 30 extending to different depths. A differential pressure gauge not shown, indicates the pressure difference between the pipes 27, 28. This is a measure of the density of the liquid in the vessel 20. It is shown that if the depths of the liquid in the vessels 24, 25 and the depths to which the pipes 27, 28, 29, 30 extend are appropriately chosen the density is measured as reduced to a reference temperature and corrected for changes due to changes of temperature. The vessel 20 has liquid inlet and outlet 21, 22 and a gas outlet 23. The vessels 24, 25 are contained in the liquid in the vessel 20 to maintain uniform temperature.
