    • An improved method for producing an aqueous solution of soluble collagen is described. The method comprises the steps of: (A) providing an aqueous ground slurry of insoluble collagen containing insoluble collagen at a first concentration and at a pH effective to obtain activity for a proteolytic enzyme added in step (B); (B) adding a proteolytic enzyme to said slurry; (C) reacting said slurry and enzyme at a temperature, T1 and for a time t1 effective for forming a slurry containing at least some soluble collagen; (D) diluting at least a portion of the slurry formed in step (C) with water to form a diluted slurry containing insoluble collagen at a second concentration; and (E) reacting said diluted slurry obtained in step (D) at a temperature, T2 and for a time t2 effective to produce a solution containing an increased amount of soluble collagen. The improved process of the present invention permits the preparation of soluble collagen utilizing reduced amounts of enzyme and water, and requires less time at low concentration for completion of the reaction.

    • A packaging system (8) and method according to the invention are generally characterized by a cushioning conversion machine (10) for forming and dispensing cut sections (32) of a cushioning product through a discharge outlet (58), an inclined dispensing chute (12) for sequentially receiving the cut sections (32) of the cushioning product, a cut section presence detector (100) for detecting the presence of a cut section (32) on the inclined chute (12) at a pick-up location (64) remote from the discharge outlet (58) of the conversion machine (10), and a controller (106) which initiates dispensing of a cut section (32) of cushioning product in response to a detected absence of a cut section (32) by the cut section presence detector (100). The dispensing chute (12), which is located adjacent the discharge opening (58) for receiving the cut sections (32) of the cushioning product, has a downwardly sloped bottom surface (64) onto which the cut section (32) of the cushioning product is deposited for sliding by gravity to a lower end of said dispensing chute (12) where an abutment (90) forms a stop engageable by a leading end of the cut section (32).

    • Cushioning conversion machines and methods are provided for converting plural layers (56, 57, 58) of a sheet-like stock material into a dunnage product. The plural layers (56, 57, 58) of the stock material are shaped into a three-dimensional strip of dunnage and the overlapped edge portions of a first layer (56) of the stock material are connected together separate from a central portion of the first layer (56). The overlapped edge portions of the first layer (56) may be generally coplanar with its adjacent unoverlapped portions. The overlapped edge portions of the first layer (56) may be connected together separate from other layers of the sheet-like stock material. Alternatively, the lateral edges of the other layers of the sheet-like stock material may be connected to each other and also the lateral edges of the first layer, but not to the respective central portions of the layers.

    • A cushioning conversion machine (20), which converts stock material (11) into cut sections (P) of dunnage, includes a cutting/aligning assembly (56). The cutting/aligning assembly (56) comprises a moving blade unit (73) which is mounted on the frame (36) in such a manner that it travels between a rest position and a cutting position whereat it cuts a dunnage strip (5) (which is emerging from a dunnage outlet opening (48)) into a cut section. The cutting/aligning assembly (56) also includes an automatic alignment device (80) which automatically aligns the cut section with the dunnage outlet opening (48) when the blade unit (73) is moved from the cutting position to the rest position. The automatic alignment device (80) is unattached to the moving blade member (72) but travels therewith during jamfree operation of the cushioning conversion machine.
