SOLUTION: A cushioning material conversion machine for converting a sheet stock material into a cushioning product is equipped with conversion assemblies including a forming assembly, a feeding assembly and a cutting assembly. The forming assembly converts the sheet stock material into chips in collaboration with the feeding assembly; the cutting assembly cuts the chips; and the feeding assembly feeds the stock material to the forming assembly, and operates by a plurality of pre-programmed operation modes.     • A cushioning conversion machine for converting a sheet-like stock material into a dunnage product includes a frame having an upstream end and a downstream end, conversion assemblies, mounted on the frame, which convert the sheet-like stock material into a continuous strip of a dunnage product, a feeding assembly, mounted on the frame, for feeding the stock material through the conversion assemblies, a cutting assembly, mounted on the frame downstream of the conversion assemblies, which cuts the continuous strip of dunnage into a section of a desired length, and a diagnostic device which monitors the operation of the machine, the diagnostic device including, a sensing device for sensing the mode of operation of the feeding assembly and the cutting assembly, a processing device which determines improper operation of the feeding assembly and the cutting assembly for the sensed mode of operation and generates signals in accordance with such improper operation, and a displaying device which displays codes corresponding to the generated signals for improper operation.

    • A packaging method includes the step of comparing a total package weight to a freight rate schedule and thereby determining a normal freight rate. The total package weight includes the weight of a container, an article to be shipped and a normal amount of dunnage. If predetermined criteria are met, the method also includes the step of reducing the amount of dunnage dispensed below that of the normal amount of dunnage such that the total package weight falls within a freight rate that is less than the normal freight rate. The predetermined criteria include one or more of a predetermined percentage above a change in freight rate, a predetermined weight above a threshold weight for an increase in freight weight, and dunnage requirements including void-volume, degree of fill for the void-volume, type of article, weight of article and type of dunnage.

    • A system (10), and associated components and methodology, that provides for automatic determination and supply of an amount of dunnage to fill the void left in a container (32) in which one or more objects have been placed. The system (10) comprises a dunnage dispenser (12) which is operable to dispense a controlled amount of a dunnage, a container scanner (14), and a logic device (76). The container scanner includes a height sensor (44) for sensing a height characteristic of a container, a width sensor (46) for sensing a width characteristic of the container, and a contour sensor (48) for sensing a contour characteristic of the objects in the container. The logic device can (1) process sensed characteristic information from the height sensor, width sensor and contour sensor, (2) determine the amount of dunnage needed to fill the void not occupied by the objects, and (3) command the dunnage dispenser to dispense the determined amount of dunnage.

    • A dunnage conversion machine (10) has an output chute (60) with a guard (70) that inhibits access to internal areas of the machine (10) through the output chute (60). Upstream of the output chute (60) the conversion machine (10) has a conversion assembly (16) that converts a stock material (14) into a strip of dunnage (20) as the stock material passes therethrough in a downstream direction. The output chute (60), through which the strip of dunnage (20) is discharged downstream of the conversion assembly (16), includes the pivotably-mounted guard (70) extending into the chute (60). The guard (70) has at its free end (72) both a forward glide surface (74) operative to glide along an outer surface of the strip of dunnage (20) as the strip moves in the downstream direction and a rearward glide surface (76) operative to glide along an outer surface of the strip of dunnage (20) as the strip moves in an upstream direction opposite the downstream direction.
