    • A binding line (10) having selectable pin spacing on a gathering chain (22) includes a gathering section (12) including the gathering chain (22) having a plurality of spaced pusher pins (28) for transporting gathered signatures (S) seriatim therealong to a signature exit end (14). A stitcher section (16) includes a stitcher chain (32) having a plurality of spaced pusher pins (38) for transporting signatures (S) seriatim therealong from a signature entry end (18). A drive system (42) provides for driving the gathering chain (22) synchronously with the stitcher chain (32) so that both the gathering section (12) and stitcher section (16) operate at a constant signature feed rate. The gathering chain pins (28) are spaced apart a first select distance and the stitcher chain pins (38) are spaced apart a second select distance. The drive sytem (42) drives the gathering chain (22) at a different velocity from the stitcher chain (32) to provide the constant signature feed rate. A transfer section (20) includes an endless overhead chain (60) having a plurality of spaced pusher pins (62) and is driven approximately between the velocities of the gathering section (12) and the stitcher section (16).
