    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide techniques for reducing time for a sector handoff.SOLUTION: A handoff is initiated. A handoff request is sent over a current wireless link of a mobile station to a current BS sector, and the current BS sector forwards the request to a new BS sector, e.g., via a network link. The new BS sector processes the request assigning dedicated resources, e.g., an identifier and dedicated resources, as well as an identifier and dedicated uplink segments. Information identifying the allocated resources is sent from the new BS sector via the current BS sector to the mobile station. The mobile station determines the time of the allocated dedicated segments on the basis of a received beacon signal from the new BS sector with predetermined timing relationships to the dedicated segments. The mobile station breaks the original wireless link just prior to the time of the first assigned dedicated segment, communicates information on the assigned dedicated segments, and establishes a new wireless link.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide techniques for mitigating interference due to peer-to-peer (P2P) communication.SOLUTION: A P2P UE may measure the signal strength of downlink signals from base stations and may set its transmit power on the basis of (e.g., proportional to) the measured signal strength in order to mitigate interference to WWAN UEs communicating with base stations. In another aspect, the P2P UE may measure the signal strength of uplink signals from WWAN UEs and may set its transmit power on the basis of (e.g., inversely proportional to) the measured signal strength in order to mitigate interference to the WWAN UEs. In one design, the P2P UE may measure the signal strength of an uplink signal from a WWAN UE, estimate the path loss between the two UEs on the basis of the measured signal strength, and determine its transmit power on the basis of the estimated path loss.
