    • The disclosure is directed to a mobile communication device, and method for handing off a mobile communications device between access points in a Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN). The mobile communications device includes a processor configured to access a database having service quality information for access points in a WLAN, the processor being further configured to use the service quality information in the database to make handoff decisions between the access points. The mobile communications device also includes a transceiver configured to handoff the mobile communications device between the access points based on the handoff decisions made by the processor. The database may be located on a server connected to an IP network, the mobile communications device, or any other suitable location within the WLAN.

    • A user terminal establishes a session with a first access point (AP0) and obtains a token associated with modem configuration information used for radio communication. The user terminal thereafter establishes a connection with a second access point (AP1) by sending the token. AP1 receives the token, obtains the modem configuration information associated with the token, and initializes an air interface protocol stack with the modem configuration information to obtain a modem-specific protocol stack for the user terminal. AP1 sends a response indicating successful connection setup. The user terminal and AP1 thereafter communicate in accordance with the modem-specific protocol stack. AP1 may attempt to fetch the session for the user terminal from AP0. If this is successful, then AP1 updates the protocol stack with the session information to obtain a complete protocol stack for the user terminal. The user terminal and AP1 thereafter communicate with the complete protocol stack.

    • A method of authenticating a mobile station (18) from a first base station (12) in a first cellular communications system controlled by a first mobile switching control station (10) to a second base station (14) in a second, different cellular system controlled by a second mobile switching control station is described. The method comprises generating at the second cellular communication system an authentication code as the result of applying an algorithm to a private key assigned to the mobile station for the second cellular communications system and a random number generated by the second cellular communications system. An authentication code is also generated at the first cellular communication system as the result of applying an algorithm to the private key and the random number. The authentication code generated at the first cellular communication system is then transmitted to a mobile station in a data packet, and, from there, the authentication code is transmitted to the second cellular communication system. The authentication code generated at the first cellular communications system is then compared with the authentication code generated at the second cellular communications system.

    • The present invention provides a method and system for contacting a local computer (125A, 125B, 125C) on a private network (130) over a public network (110) using a specialized domain name server (115). In one embodiment, a remote computer (105A, 105B, 105C) initiates a request to communicate with a local computer (125A, 125B, 125C) on a private network (130) using a domain name assigned to the local computer. Upon receiving the request to communicate (305), a specialized domain name server (120) generates a subsequent request for the local computer to communicate with the specialized domain name server (310). Next, a network address translator (120) generates a public network address for contacting the local computer and transmits the public network address (320) to the specialized domain name server (115). The specialized domain name server (120) then communicates the public network address (325, 330) to the remote computer (105A, 105B, 105C) which is then able to contact the local computer (125A, 125B, 125C) using the public network address.
