    • The deferral mechanism described herein may improve medium reuse in a wireless network with transmit power imbalances. For example, in one embodiment, an apparatus employing the deferral mechanism described herein may comprise a receiver to sense a data unit transmitted on a medium associated with the wireless network, wherein the data unit may comprise information indicating a transmit power associated therewith. Furthermore, the apparatus may comprise one or more processors to initiate a transmission on the medium associated with the wireless network if the apparatus is not an intended receiver of the sensed data unit, the transmit power associated with the data unit exceeds a transmit power associated with the apparatus, and a received power associated with the data unit does not equal or exceed a clear channel assessment threshold plus a difference between the transmit power associated with the data unit and the transmit power associated with the apparatus.

    • Supporting communication over an extended range in a wireless network. In one aspect, a station (e.g. access point) sends multiple messages (a first and a second CTS) of a given type (i.e. non-extended range, NR, and extended range, ER) for stations operating on different operating modes (NR and ER stations) on reception of another message (RTS message). The messages sent can be detected by stations with different capabilities (i.e. NR and ER), which may avoid collisions between stations. In more concrete terms, a first station receives a Request-to-Send (RTS) message from a second station having data to send. The first station sends a first Clear-to-Send (CTS) message and also a second CTS message in response to the RTS message. The second CTS message has an extended range as compared to the first CTS message. The first station thereafter (i) receives data sent by the second station in response to the second CTS message and (ii) sends an acknowledgement having an extended range. In a different embodiment, energy measurements covering multiple time slots are made during a backoff procedure to support extended and non-extended stations coexistence.
