    • Methods, systems, and devices are described for femtocells to retrieve neighboring macrocells' timing information, using messages from mobile devices that are associated with the relevant macrocell In some cases, detection of the femtocell, such as through an out-of-band detection, may trigger the mobile device to determine timing information with respect to the macrocell and/or the femtocell. In some embodiments, the mobile device associated with the macrocell may be in active state and looking for a candidate femtocell for handover. The femtocell may receive this timing information from the mobile device and utilize it to synchronize with the neighboring macrocell. Embodiments may address fine timing synchronization and tracking for asynchronous and quasi-synchronous wide-area wireless networks (e.g., 3GPP/3GPP2 variants like UMTS, LTE, CDMA 1x, 1x EV-DO, etc).

    • A receiver window for symbol extraction is provided. A symbol is spread across a plurality of sub-carriers of a frequency band for transmission. If the frequency band is affected by narrowband interference, the receiver window concentrates the narrowband interference energy to minimize its effect on distant sub-carriers within the frequency band. The receiver window is shaped for extracting the symbol from the frequency band, wherein the receiver window has a starting point before the start of the symbol. The receiver window overlaps a previous receiver window for the previous adjacent symbol on the same frequency band. The receiver window is shaped by overlapping and adding a channel impulse response segment from a zero-padded portion of the symbol to the beginning of the symbol and overlapping and adding a second portion from the previous zero-padded symbol (from the same frequency band) to the end of the symbol.

    • Techniques for extending coverage of a wireless communication network (e.g., a cellular network) to indoor and other locations are described. A wireless device may communicate with a base station in a wireless network via downlink and uplink frequency channels in a licensed frequency band using frequency division duplexing (FDD). The wireless device may communicate with a piconet base station (PBS) in a pico network (piconet) via the uplink frequency channel using time division duplexing (TDD). The PBS may communicate with the wireless device on the uplink frequency channel and may exchange data with the wireless network via a wireline communication link. The PBS may forward data received from the wireless device to the wireless network and may also forward data received from the wireless network for the wireless device to the wireless device. The PBS may receive paging messages from the wireless network for the wireless device and may forward the paging messages to the wireless device.
