    • A demultiplexer employs collimators for directing light of different wavelengths towards a filter so that light of one wavelength may be passed while reflecting light of other wavelengths. Light of the wavelengths that are passed or reflected may again be directed towards the same or different filter for further demultiplexing. The filter used has a characteristic wavelength band that varies with the angle of incidence to the filter. The same types of filter may be used for multiplexing. An input beam is passed through a filter at an angle of incidence at which light of a different wavelength would be reflected. Thus two input beams carrying such two wavelengths are directed towards the same location of the filter on opposite sides of the filter so that the reflected light of one wavelength will emerge as one beam with light of the other wavelength that passes through the filter. The emerging beam is then collected to multiplex light of the two wavelengths. This process can be repeated to multiplex light of a plurality of wavelengths.

    • Multiplexing an additional bit stream with a primary bit stream, where the primary bit stream is encoded into an xB/yB encoded bit stream, involves selecting yB code-words to convey the additional bit stream. Each xB word is represented by one yB code-word from a corresponding group of yB code-words, with each group of yB code-words including at least one yB code-word belonging to a category of code-words that tends to exhibit positive DC balance and at least one yB code-word belonging to a category that tends to exhibit negative DC balance. Bits of the additional bit stream are multiplexed with the primary bit stream by selecting code-words from one of the two categories to convey 1's and from the other category to convey 0's. Code-words that are not selected to convey bits of the additional bit stream are selected to balance the running disparity of the encoded bit stream.

    • An optical access network and method for transmitting optical data in the network utilizes an interleaved polling scheme to efficiently use the available bandwidth of the network. The use of the interleaved polling scheme allows a central terminal of the network to dynamically allocate upstream bandwidth from remote terminals of the network to the central terminal in response to the amount of data that is waiting at the remote terminals to be transmitted to the OLT. In one embodiment, the optical access network is based on Passive Optical Network (PON) technology. In another embodiment, the optical access network utilizes Ethernet protocol to encapsulate data in Ethernet frames for transmission. Thus, in these embodiments, the optical access network includes all of the advantages associated with the PON technology and/or the Ethernet protocol. In addition, since the allocation of upstream bandwidth is on an as needed basis, loss of bandwidth due to unfilled time slots is substantially eliminated.
