    • A library system having a reader and labeling device (200) for interrogating data storage cartridges of the type containing an in-built memory chip having information stored describing details of data contained on the data storage medium is disclosed. The reader-labeling device comprises a processor, random access memory, printer, display, keypad, operating system, transponder, receiver and battery power supply. Key parameters describing a data cartridge can be accessed quickly and efficiently without the need to access the data storage medium itself. A cartridge media specific label may be rapidly printed for attachment to a data storage cartridge. The reader-labeling device may be incorporated into an automatic library (201) accessible by a robotic arm (202), wherein the user may quickly read summary information describing a data storage cartridge or its contents from information stored on a memory attached to the cartridge by use of the reader-labeling device externally controlled.

    • Clients are connected via a LAN to backup apparatus including hard and tape drives, respectively primary and secondary backups. Each client schedules backup operations on a time basis since last backup, the amount of information generated since last backup, etc. Prior to a backup, each client sends to the backup apparatus a request including information representing the files to be backed up. The backup apparatus receives backup requests from the clients and accepts or rejects backup requests based on backup and network loading. The backup apparatus eliminates redundant files and indicates to the clients, prior to the file back up, that some files requested to be backed up are already stored and are not to be sent. The backup apparatus enables a client to restore any of its ‘lost’ data by copying it directly from the disk, without the need for backup administrator assistance.

    • A tape drive operates as a bootable device for a PC. In a first mode, the drive operates as a normal tape drive. In a second mode, the drive emulates a bootable CD-ROM drive. Application software for backing up and restoring computer system data causes the PC running the software to generate a bootable image comprising an operating system including the PC hardware configuration, and data recovery application software. The bootable image can re-build the PC in response to a disaster, such as hard disk corruption or system destruction. The bootable image is stored on tape in front of a file system backup data set. In the second mode, the tape drive boots the PC and restores the operating system and application software. When loaded, the application software switches the tape drive into the first operation mode and restores the file system backup data set to the PC.

    • Disclosed is a method of restoring a client device following failure of the client device, the client being connectable to a network comprising a server device. The method comprises saving to the server device a configuration state of the client device, the saved configuration state comprising client network interface configuration information, and a file of the client device. The method further comprises, following failure of the client computer, recording on a medium bootable on the client device program instructions for configuring the client device according to the saved configuration state, booting the client device from the bootable medium, configuring a network interface of the client device in accordance with the program instructions and the saved configuration state and restoring the file to the client device by copying over the network.
