    • A mounting for changing or laterally reciprocatable inking, damping, or like applicator rolls of a printing press, which rolls are driven by a friction roll in engagement therewith. The changing applicator rolls each have their spindles mounted outside of the roll shell for rotational and axial movement in roller locks. Axial travel is limited by a shoulder ring in the roller lock, the ring cooperating with the outer race of a roller bearing which supports the roll spindle for relative rotational movement within the roller lock. Each roller lock also is mounted so as to be axially locatable in different positions for achieving desired axial movement of the applicator roll, or for preventing spreading movement of the applicator roll entirely.

    • An offset printing system includes an improved inking unit for applying ink to a rotatable plate cylinder, wherein the inking unit appreciably reduces the production of contaminants. In particular, the inking unit one or more ink application rollers that adjacently contact the plate cylinder. A series of rollers are in ink communication with these application rollers, including at least one inking roller in direct contact with the ink application rollers, and at least one inking roller in indirect inking communication with the ink application rollers. The inking rollers are driven in a positively locking manner and which are drivable at a peripheral speed that differs from the peripheral speed of the plate cylinder, and the inking roller furthest from the plate cylinder is driven with the greatest peripheral speed differential relative to the plate cylinder. This peripheral speed differential between rollers results in a relative slippage and wiping effect which advantageously reduces the effect of contaminants.

    • The dampening unit of a rotary printing press is provided with additional transmission components and a swiveling stop mechanism so that the dampening unit can also apply a varnish having an arbitrary viscosity. For applying dampening solution to the plate cylinder (5) of the rotary press, the dampening unit has a fountain roller (13) feeding a transfer roller (15) and an applicator roller (16) which are driven by the press drive. When the dampening unit is used as a varnishing unit, clutches (28, 29) are enabled and disabled so that the transfer roller (15) is driven by a separate drive (17) which rotates the fountain roller (13). The applicator roller (16) is selectively thrown off by pneumatic actuators (32, 35) in such a way that all rollers (14-16) of the dampening unit are connected to each other and can be driven by the separate drive (17). A third position is also defined wherein the applicator roller (16) is also selectively thrown off 5/10 mm from the transfer roller (15). When the applicator roller (16) is thrown off the plate cylinder (11), the fountain roller (16) is preferably thrown on and off periodically by a pneumatic actuator (39).

    • A mechanism for axially reciprocating at least one of the distributing rollers of a printing press. A rocker having an elongated slot therein is mounted on a first pivot and oscillated thereabout by means of a link eccentrically connected to the press drive shaft. An oscillating lever is pivotally connected to the press frame for movement about a second pivot and includes a sliding block captively held in the elongated slot of the rocker. The oscillating lever is operatively connected to at least one of the distributing rollers so as to axially reciprocate the roller in response to the oscillation of the lever. The location of the first pivot is adjustable with respect to the press frame so as to change the orientation of the elongated slot in the rocker and, thus, vary the magnitude of travel of the oscillating lever which reciprocates the distributing roller. For such purpose, the first pivot is secured in one arm of a two-armed lever, the lever being pivotally connected to the frame. The second arm of the lever is secured to a traveling nut which is threaded on a shaft mounted for rotational movement with respect to the frame. Either a manually turnable knob or an electric motor is connected to the shaft so as to rotate the same, resulting in a rotation of the two-armed lever about its pivot to change the position of the first pivot held in the first arm of the lever.

One or more plating devices (12) are provided which each have a plate-like element (19) adjustably positionable with respect to a respective roller for leveling ink on the surface of the roller before or after passage through a contact zone with an adjacent roller in which ink is pulled off and separated between the rollers. The plating devices are relatively simple in construction and operation and provide stable ink guidance on the roller surfaces that noticeably improves print quality.
