A transmitted signal is emitted into the interior of an encapsulation to make it possible to easily detect the position of a switching device in an encapsulated switching installation. A resultant reflection signal is received and stored. After a repetition of this process, the two received reflection signals are compared with one another. In the event of any discrepancy, a message signal is produced for the new switching state.
