    • Computer-implemented method and apparatus and associated for constructing a network configuration map comprised of at least two interconnected network entities selected from a series of network entities. A series of configuration scripts, each corresponding to one of the series of network entities include a first section comprised of a first portion containing an icon file for generating an icon representative of the corresponding one of the series of network entities, a second portion containing a set of connection rules for the corresponding one of the series of network entities and a second section containing a series of executable instructions for constructing a configuration file for the network entity. A first software module constructs the network configuration map by generating a workspace, placing first and second icons on the workspace in response to a first input received from a user interface and connecting the icons if the set of connection rules contained in the second portion of the corresponding configuration scripts permit connection therebetween. A second software module then executes the series of instructions contained in the second section of the configuration script to construct a configuration file, suitable for upload to the network device to enable configuration thereof, for a selected one of the connected icons.

    • A rack mounted computer system comprises a plurality of hot replaceable servers and power supplies that are mounted in chassis and assemblies which are coupled together and in which component specific data is stored in cache memory. The cache memory preferably is implemented on a communication module contained in each chassis/assembly. Some, or all, of the rack mounted components include ROM which contains component specific data. Such data includes one or more values specific to that component. The data may include any or all of the following: serial number, part name, manufacturing information, reorder information and physical dimensions of the associated component. By storing the component specific data in cache, less traffic is necessary on the rack's inter-chassis/assembly communication link(s) the chassis/assembly communication module snoops its cache and, if the data present in cache, provides the requested data from cache to the component.

    • A method and apparatus for automatically monitoring Simple Network Manageable Devices. A processor accesses a memory storage device to retrieve a device definition file and an interface definition file associated with each interface referenced in the device definition file. The processor creates a Device-Type-Specific Formula-Monitor Definitions (DTSFMD) data structure based on information contained within the device definition file and the interface definition files and stores the DTSFMD data structure in the storage device. The processor accesses a communication network to retrieve information used to identify the types of devices and associated interfaces located within the communication network. Based on the retrieved information, the devices are identified as a router, a switch, a repeater or a device for which no monitoring is to occur. Based on the retrieved information and requirements established in the DTSFMD, the processor determines which interfaces are to be monitored and how they are to be monitored and automatically performs monitoring to generate data for graphical displays and the setting and clearing alarms.

    • A configuration manager for configuring a network device remotely coupled thereto and an associated computer-implemented method for configuring the network device. The configuration manager includes a configuration script stored in a memory subsystem of a computer system and first and second software modules respectively executable by a processor subsystem of the computer system. The configuration script contains a series of executable instructions for constructing a configuration file and a bootptab file for a first specified type of network device. By executing the instructions contained in the configuration script, the first software module may construct a configuration file suitable for upload to a network device and a bootptab file suitable for identifying the network device. Configuration requests issued by the network device are processed by the second software module by identifying the requesting network device using the constructed bootptab file and configuring the requesting network device by uploading the constructed configuration file thereto.
