    • The present invention provides a method for transmitting data stream via wireless medium for contention based medium access across a wireless network having a plurality of stations and an access point communicating to the stations via wireless medium. The method includes: (i) transmitting data stream from the station according to prescheduled wireless medium occupancy reservation for the station within only prescheduled medium occupancy period of a selective contention period; (ii) performing a contention between the stations for wireless medium occupancy for a contention successful station to transmit data stream within only contention medium occupancy period of the selective contention period; (iii) transmitting data stream from the contention successful station after the contention; and (iv) prescheduling a wireless medium occupancy reservation for the contention successful station to transmit within a prescheduled medium occupancy period of next selective contention period.

    • The present invention provides a method and system for efficiently scheduling wireless LAN traffic, giving the network the ability to serve both real-time and non-real time applications concurrently, while maintaining a requested level of quality of service for the real time application. It describes a method for scheduling quality of service traffic and a method to optimize this schedule thereby reducing the overall amount of time that is required for serving quality of service traffic (which is coordinated by a centralized network coordinator entity) and increasing the bandwidth available for non-real-time traffic. One application of such a scheduler would be WLANs that carry AV streams, such as may be found in a home based WLAN. Furthermore, a method is provided for announcing the schedule to all nodes in a wireless network to, for example, implement a power savings feature, thereby optimizing battery life and reducing the size and weight of portable network access terminals.

    • In a data communication network, data route changes happen frequently due to various reasons. For the path specific resource management signaling, such route changes would trigger large amount of signaling actions. Some of the signaling action requires a complicated process and may take a long time. This may cause service interruption in extreme cases. This invention proposed a method for signaling state management along the old data path to achieve fast signaling state re-establishment. Instead of removing the signaling states along the old data path explicitly or by time-out, the invention preserved the signaling state along the old data path with reduced state management. In the reduced state management, network resources that are held by the states along the old data path are released and minimum information is retained. The states become “dormant” states that do not require active monitoring from the network. When the old path is in use again, the states could be restored and network resources be re-allocated fast. This would be much faster than re-establishing the whole state from scratch. This invention also provides a method for fast recovery from transient route changes by allowing the signaling aware nodes at the crossover point of the data path to monitor the status of old path. This way, the signaling system could quickly re-establish the necessary state along the old path once it's found available again.

    • By introducing a hierarchical encryption scheme and the use of asymmetric cryptography, the critical information in message exchanges is concealed from unauthorized entities. This helps greatly in preventing man-in-the-middle attacks faced by inter-working. In addition, access control is conducted by introducing a network structure having a rule interpreter that is capable of mapping general rules to WLAN specific commands. It obviates the needs for mobile user's home network to understand information about every WLAN it is inter-worked with. A common interface independent of WLAN technologies could be used by the home network for all the WLANs. The above conception provides a solution to the problems of the protection of user identification information and access control in the inter-working of WLAN.

According to the technique, a home agent (1000) has new functional blocks to detect the presence of an affiliated roaming mobile node and proceeds to advise the designated home agent of the mobile node regarding their availability. When the registered home agent decides to handover a mobile node, the available alternate home agents are sorted according to the metric of hop count distance and the highest valued is selected so that an available alternate home agent is assigned. A specially formatted mobility option is sent to the mobile node in order to direct it to register to the newly selected alternate home agent.
