    • A substantially transparent and preferably textured diffuser element disposed in surmounting relation to an array of light emitting diodes intended to illuminate a legend-bearing sign panel of an exit sign or similar illuminated sign, the invention allows compact sign enclosure formation and provides even illumination of sign panels on all legend-bearing face walls of the exit sign even though multiple point light sources such as light emitting diodes comprise the illumination source. The diffuser element of the invention is preferably embodied in a tent-shaped configuration with a plurality of apertures disposed along the apex of the diffuser element with one each of the apertures being disposed immediately above each light emitting diode. The preferred diffuser element of the invention is elongated in conformation and used with a linear array of light emitting diodes, the array being preferably located along at least one interior wall of the sign enclosure adjacent at least one of the legend-bearing face walls. The diffuser element is particularly useful with relatively non-diffuse, narrow-viewing angle light emitting diodes, the aperture in the diffuser element above each diode allowing substantial portions of the light emanating outwardly from free end portions of each diode to pass undiffused therethrough and into interior portions of the sign enclosure which are spaced from the LED array to illuminate portions of one or more sign panels spaced from the array. Light emanating from lower portions of the light emitting diodes at "flat" angles is diffused through the diffuser element into portions of the sign enclosure nearmost the LED array to illuminate portions of one or more sign panels adjacent the array.

    • A reflector element intended to locate each light emitting diode of an array of light emitting diodes between outwardly angled, reflective surfaces in order to manage the distribution of light within an enclosure of an exit sign or other illuminated sign thereby illuminating a legend-bearing sign panel of the sign, the invention allows compact sign enclosure formation and provides even illumination of sign panels on all legend-bearing face walls of the exit sign even though multiple point light sources such as light emitting diodes comprise the illumination source. The reflector element of the invention is preferably embodied in a U-shaped dual wall configuration with each wall being formed substantially with a plurality of triangular tooth-like projections interspersed with substantially triangular openings, the projections angling outwardly from a reflector base, a series of apertures being formed in the reflector base for receiving the light emitting diodes of the array. The preferred reflector element of the invention is elongated in conformation and used with a linear array of light emitting diodes, each diode lying between projections forming opposing walls of the reflector element and being shaded thereby. The light emitting diode array is preferably located along at least one interior wall of the sign enclosure adjacent at least one of the legend-bearing face walls. The reflector element is particularly useful with relatively diffuse, medium-viewing angle light emitting diodes, the projections of the walls shading each diode acting to reflect light emanating from the diodes upwardly and outwardly of the reflector element and into interior portions of the sign enclosure to illuminate portions of one or more sign panels having at least edge portions disposed adjacent the LED array.

The present fixture is preferably formed from light weight materials such as polycarbonate/ABS or sheet metal configured to mount in tension internal weight such as weight due to enlarged battery mass and the like as well as externally mounted emergency lights. Manufacture of the present fixture is improved by the ability to mold major portions of the fixture from suitable polymeric materials, thereby allowing formation of substantial portions of the fixture located internally of the housing integrally with the housing to substantially reduce the number of parts necessary to be assembled together in an assembly situation. Assembly, installation and maintenance of a molded fixture according to the invention is further improved by the ability to snap-fit together all structural elements of the fixture both internally and externally of the housing.
