A method of using the present invention includes storing a replacement scan window within a storage compartment, removing an existing scan window from an operational location of an automatic document feeder, retrieving the replacement scan window from the storage compartment, and installing the replacement scan window in the operational location of the automatic document feeder.

    • A representative embodiment provides for an automatic document feeder apparatus configured for use in conjunction with an imaging device, and includes a feed guide supported in spaced overlying relation to a scan window of the imaging device. The automatic document feeder further includes a first document guide and a second document guide. The first and second document guides are supported in spaced relation to each other and are configured to guide a sheet media between the feed guide and the scan window. In use, the sheet media is the only element present between the scan window and the feed guide.     • A scan window cover assembly in an imaging system includes a document feed system convertible between a manual feed mode, in which individual documents are placed manually onto a scan bed, and an automatic feed mode, in which an automatic document feeder moves documents over a scan window. The scan window cover assembly includes a scan window cover capable of selectively covering the scan window of the imaging system when the imaging system is in its manual feed mode, and can also include a cover actuating mechanism connected to the scan window cover. The cover actuating mechanism is adapted and constructed to move the scan window cover between a covering position blocking the scan window, and an open position outside the scan window. In systems wherein the automatic document feeder pivots to change the imaging system between its automatic feed mode and its manual feed mode, the cover actuating mechanism can be provided to move the scan window cover in response to the pivoting of the automatic document feeder, for example, by causing the scan window cover to slide in response to pivoting of the automatic document feeder.

    • A single plate flatbed scanner utilizing a single sensor to detect both opening of a lid covering the plate and the leading edge of an automatically fed document. The flatbed scanner includes a contact glass plate defining a flatbed scanning area where a document to be scanned may be manually positioned. An automatic document feeder (ADF) scan window where ADF-fed documents are scanned is defined within the flatbed scanning area. An image sensor is maintained at a fixed position in the ADF scan window while scanning ADF-fed documents. To scan a manually fed document, the image sensor moves under the flatbed scanning area so as to scan an image of the document. Since the ADF scan window and the flatbed scanning area both are defined in the same area of the contact glass plate, a document inadvertently left on the contact glass blocks the ADF scan window and prevents the scanning of an ADF fed document. A single sensor is utilized to detect the opening of the ADF which uncovers the contact glass to allow manual placement of a document. Detecting the opening of the glass plate cover is used to determine whether or not a document has been left on the glass plate after scanning. The same sensor is also utilized to detect the leading edge of an ADF fed document to initiate the scanning process at the precise time the document reaches the ADF scan window.
