    • The sizing agents are mixtures of alkenyl succinic anhydrides in which the alkenyl groups have in the range of about 6 to about 40 carbon atoms, and in which at least 97 wt % of the alkenyl groups are bifurcated on the alpha carbon atom into two branches neither of which has less than two carbon atoms. Other characteristics of the mixture are that (1) 20-50% of the bifurcated alkenyl groups have only one methyl or methylene substituent and no other side chain, and the remainder of such bifurcated groups have two straight chain branches (no side chain) emanating from the alpha carbon atom, (2) at least 3 alkenyl succinic anhydrides that differ in the number of alkenyl carbon atoms are each present in at least 5 wt % in the mixture, (3) no more than about 50 wt % of the alkenyl succinic anhydrides is any given alkenyl succinic anhydride or mixture of isomers having the same number of carbon atoms in their alkenyl groups, (4) the average number of carbon atoms in the alkenyl groups is ca. 16-22 per molecule, and (5) the mixture has a viscosity at 25° C. in the range of about 80 to about 220 centistokes.

    • Provided are alkenyl and/or alkyl succinimides formed from at least one alkenyl or alkyl succinic anhydride and at least one aliphatic amine having one or two primary amino groups in the molecule. These succinimides are characterized in that each alkenyl or alkyl group thereof contains in the range of 16 to 30 carbon atoms. Such group is bifurcated on its alpha carbon atom into two branches neither of which contains less than 2 carbon atoms, one such branch being free of any side chain, and the other such branch either being free of any side chain or containing at most one methyl or methylene side chain. In addition the succinimide has a viscosity at 80° C. of less than about 100 centistokes. These succinimides are especially useful as internal and external sizing agents for paper and paper products.

    • This invention provides a process for producing a betaine/amine oxide mixture. This process comprises reacting, in a liquid medium, an alkali metal &ohgr;-halocarboxylate with a first tertiary amine of the formula Ra2RbN, wherein each Ra group is a hydrocarbyl group which independently has from 1 to about 4 carbon atoms, and wherein the Rb group is a hydrocarbyl group which has from about 8 to about 24 carbon atoms, to produce a betaine product solution. To the betaine product solution is added a second tertiary amine of the formula Ra2RbN, wherein each Ra group is a hydrocarbyl group which independently has from 1 to about 4 carbon atoms, and wherein the Rb group is a hydrocarbyl group which has from about 8 to about 24 carbon atoms, to produce an amine/betaine mixture. The first and second tertiary amines can be separate portions of the same amine. Preferably, however, the first and second tertiary amines differ from each other. In a carbon dioxide atmosphere, the amine/betaine mixture is mixed with hydrogen peroxide to yield a betaine/amine oxide mixture.

    • A composition containing a zeolite and an acid suitable for use in increasing bone strength in an animal having a bone strength less than desired and/or for use in treating, preventing or delaying the onset of a bone disorder such as osteoporosis, osteochondrosis, or dyschondroplasia. A preferred zeolite is zeolite A. Preferred acids are illustrated by citric, fumaric and aspartic acids. The presence of such acids in the composition enhances the breakdown (i.e. decomposition) of the zeolite thereby making it more efficacious for increasing bone strength or combating bone disease. Preferably, the compositions contain from about 35 to about 65 weight percent of the acid; the remainder being the zeolite Such compositions can be admixed with other materials such as excipients used in the preparation of unit dosage forms.
