    • A surgical access device comprises an elongate shaft with a bladeless tip at the distal end. The bladeless tip has an outer surface with a proximal portion, a distal portion, and an intermediate portion. In a cross section in the proximal portion, the outer surface defines a circle. The outer surface has first and second opposing surface portions of the shape that are generally aligned with the length. In a cross section in the distal portion, the outer surface defines a circle. In progressive proximal cross sections in the distal portion, the circle expands. In progressive proximal cross sections in the intermediate portion, a ratio of the width of the shape to the length of the shape increases and the first and second opposing surface portions are more arcuate.

    • A surgical obturator comprising an elongate shaft extending along an axis between a proximal end and a distal end includes a bladeless tip disposed at the distal end of the shaft. The tip has a blunt point and a pair of shorter side surfaces separated by a relatively longer pair of opposing surfaces to form in radial cross-section a geometric shape that has a longer length and relatively narrower width. The side surfaces and opposing surfaces terminate in end surfaces located proximally from the blunt point. The end surfaces extend radially outwardly from opposite locations of the outer surface. A conical surface facilitates initial insertion of the obturator and the geometric shape facilitates separation of consecutive layers of muscle tissue having fibers oriented in different directions and provides proper alignment of the tip between the layers of muscle.

    • A surgical obturator comprising an elongate shaft extending along an axis between a proximal end and a distal end, and a bladeless tip disposed at the distal end of the shaft having a conical surface forming proximally into an outer surface, the outer surface extending distally to a blunt point and having a pair of side sections. The side sections extend from the blunt point radially outwardly with progressive positions proximally along the axis. The conical surface facilitates insertion of the obturator with a reduced penetration force and minimizes tenting of the body wall. The conical surface further facilitates separation of different layers of the body wall and provides proper alignment of the tip between the layers. The surgical obturator may be constructed from a disposable or reusable material such as a metal or an autoclavable polymer. While certain embodiments have been particularly shown and described with reference to exemplary embodiments thereof, it will be understood by those of ordinary skill in the art that various changes in form and details may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope thereof as defined by the following claims.

    • The present invention relates to an apparatus that controllably allows the relative rotation between structures, such as a gimbal and a structure to which it is mounted. According to one aspect, the apparatus includes a twist capsule assembly with internal stop mechanisms that controllably prevents the amount of clockwise and counterclockwise rotation with respect to a rotation axis. According to another aspect of the invention, by limiting the amount of relative rotation, other means of communicating power and signals between the structures can be used, thus avoiding or reducing the limitations imposed by conventional slip ring assemblies. According to yet another aspect, the invention includes techniques and structures for allowing conventionally shielded cables and wires to be used in place of slip rings, while allowing for rotation between structures, thus even further improving the communication of power and signals between structures.

    • A vehicle having an adjustable seating assembly and related method. One member of the seating assembly may be adjusted to provide a backrest to a straddle type seat of the vehicle. As such, when a carrier bed having an accessory platform is located rearward of the straddle type seat, the one member may optionally be used to provide a wall portion of the carrier bed. The one member may also be adjusted to provide an extension to the straddle type seat.     • A large pressure differential is created between the leading face of the rotor blade and the trailing face of the rotor blade during the power cycle which creates a large amount of force that rotates the rotor blade about the central shaft. In some embodiments, gaps are provided between the inside edge of the rotor blade and a stationary shaft which vents wind collected by the rotor blade during certain portions of the rotation cycle. The vented wind increases the pressure on the trailing face of the rotor blades during the return cycle to further assist in the efficiency of this system. In addition, an integrated power plant is disclosed that provides a source of renewable energy in the form of a cross-flow wind turbine that includes solar cells mounted on south facing surfaces of the stators. The stators can be used to store liquids and fuels generated by the renewable energy sources. Electrical power generated by the renewable energy sources can be used in a desalination process to generate pure drinking water that can be stored in the stator devices. Electrical energy generated by the renewable energy sources can be used in an electrolysis device to generate oxygen and hydrogen gases. The oxygen and hydrogen gases can be used to operate a fuel cell to generate electricity when needed. The hydrogen can also be used to operate a hydrogen engine that runs an auxiliary generator to supply auxiliary electrical power when needed. A biofuel engine, propane gas engine, natural gas engine, or diesel engine can also be used to run the auxiliary generator. Mechanical power from the wind turbine can be used to run mechanical pumps to pump water to a reservoir at a higher elevation, which can then be used to run a water turbine that is connected to the auxiliary generator to generate electrical power when needed.
