    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To focus molecules into a narrow band, in electrophoresis. SOLUTION: A gel electrophoretic system 10 for separation includes: an electrophoretic cell comprising a first end, a second end, and a gel medium extending between the first and second ends; an electrode grid disposed in close proximity to the gel which includes a plurality of closely spaced parallel electrodes 32, the electrode grid being disposed with respect to the cell such that the electrodes 32 extend in a direction generally perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the cell; and voltage controllers 40 and 50 for providing multi-phase electrical signals. With the voltage controllers 40 and 50 electrically connected to the electrode grid, a multi-phase electrical signal which is a first output is provided from the voltage controller 40 to the first end while a multi-phase electrical signal which is a second output is provided from the voltage controller 50 to the second end. The multi-phase electrical signal which is the first output passes from a first region of the electrode grid to a second region of the electrode grid while the multi-phase electrical signal which is the second output passes from the second region of the electrode grid to the first region of the electrode grid.
