    • A coating composition comprises a slurry of aggregate mixed with an asphalt emulsion comprising asphalt; water; a non-ionic emulsifying agent of general formula where R is hydrogen, aryl or alkaryl, and x, y and z are integers, such that (1) when x=y=o, z is 20 to 60, R is aryl or alkylaryl, and (2), when x, y and z are each greater than zero, (x + z) is 50 to 350, y is 40 to 60 and R is hydrogen, aryl or alkaryl; and optionally a cationic or anionic emulsifying agent. The emulsion can be mixed with aggregate in proportion 0.5-5 parts emulsion to 4-10 parts aggregate. A mixture of the emulsion with sand and Portland cement or diatomaceous earth, optionally with glass wool, rock wool, hemp or cotton may be used for coating canals, reservoirs, water ponds and dam-facings. Examples relate to compositions of the emulsion with quartz/dolomite/calcite aggregates A and B, and river sand/limestone screenings aggregate C. There is general reference to slurries of gravel, sand and limestone with the emulsions.ALSO:A oil-in-water asphalt emulsion comprises asphalt, water and a non-ionic emulsifying agent (I) of general formula: where R- is hydrogen, aryl or alkaryl, x, y and z are integers, such that (1) when x=o, y=o, z is in the range 20 to 60 inclusive, and R is aryl or alkaryl and (2) when x, y and z are each greater than zero, (x+z) is in the range 50 to 350 inclusive, y is in the range 40 to 60 inclusive, and R is hydrogen, aryl or alkaryl. A cationic (II) or anionic (III) emulsifying agent may also be present. Typical compositions by weight are: asphalt 50 to 75%, water 25 to 50%, non-ionic surfactant 0.5 to 3.5%, ionic surfactant 0.005 to 0.175%. (I) may be octylphenoxypoly (ethylene oxy) ethanol with 30 to 40 ethyleneoxy groups in the chain, or a compound of formula where (x+z) is approximately 296 and y is approximately 56. Other examples are given. (II) may be a salt of an organic nitrogen base having in the cation portion at least one basic nitrogen atom and an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical of 12 to 24 carbon atoms, for example (a) tetra-substituted quaternary ammonium compounds of formula (b) salts of heterocyclic nitrogen bases such as alkyl pyridine, alkyl quinoline, alkyl isoquinoline and alkyl imidazoline, especially those of formula: (c) primary, secondary and tertiary amines, particularly those of formula R3NH (CH2)m NH2; (d) compounds of formula: in which A is phenyl or phenoxyethoxy. Compounds (III) may be alkylaryl sulfonates; alkyl sulfates; alkyl polyphosphates; amido-phospho salts; or esters such as sodium diamyl sulfosuccinate and disodium N-octadecylsulfosuccinate. There is also reference to addition of acids; alkali metal or alkaline earth metal bases; hydroxyethylecellulose; soya flour; aluminium chloride; calcium chloride; carboxyvinyl polymer.
