    • 3860. Pearson, W. Feb. 16. Signals on engines; indicators and repeaters, signal; contacts, mechanical.-Relates to railway signalling- apparatus more particularly applicable for use during fogs. The spring hammer I. of a bell &c. on the engine, is connected by a cord H to a cast-iron or other frangible core E, which is mounted in a loose sleeve G held by catches C in the socket B on the frame B, this frame being removably secured by clips &c. within the tube A fixed to the engine. The core E is formed with a head F, to prevent it from being pulled through the sleeve G, and the sleeve itself is divided at g. On the permanent way is mounted a retractile bar or stop, worked preferably in conjunction with the ordinary signal, so that, when the signal is at 'safety,' the bar is inoperative, but, when the signal is at 'danger,' the bar is in position to engage the lower end of the sleeve G, when the parts of the signalling-apparatus on the engine are assembled, as shown in Fig. 1. When the sleeve G strikes the bar, the core E is broken at g, so releasing the hammer I, which then sounds the alarm. After each operation, the frame B is withdrawn from the tube, and a new core &c. inserted.
