    • A system and method is disclosed for maintaining, in a Storage Area Network (SAN), the consistency of a local copy of a remote file system sub-tree obtained from a remote source. Directory structure of the remote file system sub-tree is mapped to a remote container attached to the SAN and each remote object of the remote file system sub-tree is represented as a local object component of the remote container. Next, each of the local objects are labeled with attributes associated with the represented remote object, and metadata describing each of the local objects is stored in a metadata server. Also, a consistency policy is associated with each of the local objects in the remote container (wherein the policy defines conditions for checking freshness of said labeled attributes), and the local object components of remote container is updated in accordance with the consistency policy.

    • A computing device-implemented method for implementing dynamic hierarchical memory cache (HMC) awareness within a storage system is described. Specifically, when performing dynamic read operations within a storage system, a data module evaluates a data prefetch policy according to a strategy of determining if data exists in a hierarchical memory cache and thereafter amending the data prefetch policy, if warranted. The system then uses the data prefetch policy to perform a read operation from the storage device to minimize future data retrievals from the storage device. Further, in a distributed storage environment that include multiple storage nodes cooperating to satisfy data retrieval requests, dynamic hierarchical memory cache awareness can be implemented for every storage node without degrading the overall performance of the distributed storage environment.

    • Embodiments are provided for cache memory systems. In one general embodiment, a method that includes receiving a host write request from a host computer, creating a sequential log file in a storage device, and copying data received during the host write request to a storage buffer. The method further includes determining if a selected quantity of data has been accumulated in the storage buffer and executing a write through of data to sequentially write the data accumulated in the storage buffer to the sequential log file and to a storage class memory device if the selected quantity of data has been accumulated in the storage buffer.

    • According to one embodiment, a method for using flash memory in a storage cache comprises receiving data to be cached in flash memory of a storage cache, at least some of the received data being received from at least one of a host system and a storage medium, selecting a block of the flash memory for receiving the data, buffering the received data until sufficient data has been received to fill the block, and overwriting existing data in the selected block with the buffered data. According to another embodiment, a method comprises receiving data, at least some of the data being from a host system and/or a storage medium, and sequentially overwriting sequential blocks of the flash memory with the received data. Other devices and methods for working with flash memory in a storage cache according to various embodiments are included and described herein.
