    • This invention relates to lens type functional retroreflective sheeting having retroreflective regions and visual functionality presenting regions, the retroreflective sheeting comprising:a base sheet consisting of a support comprising a functional resin layer containing a functional pigment having light-storing or fluorescent properties, microspherical lens-embedding regions in which microspherical lenses are densely distributed on the surface of the functional resin layer of the support so as to form a mono-layer, and microspherical lens-free regions in which substantially no microspherical lens is embedded and the functional resin layer is exposed;a transparent protective film disposed above the microspherical lens-bearing surface of the base sheet; andbonds at which said base sheet and said transparent protective film are partly bonded together. This lens type functional retroreflective sheeting not only afford good visibility to viewers positioned in the direction of the light source (e.g., automobile drivers), but also afford good visibility at night to drivers and pedestrians positioned in directions different from the that of the light source.

    • The present invention provides a method for producing retroreflective sheeting useful for marking or the like of signs such as road signs and construction signs; number plates of vehicles such as motorcars and motorcycles; materials for safety such as clothes and life jackets; signboards, etc., and the method is a method for producing retroreflective sheeting, which comprises embedding glass beads substantially in a monolayer in a temporary support at least one surface of which is composed of a thermoplastic resin in such a manner that at least part of each bead is embedded in the thermoplastic resin; forming a vapor-deposited metal film on the surface in which the glass beads were embedded; superposing thereon a thermoformable support film; pressing the resultant superposed matter under heating to embed the vapor-deposited metal film portion of each of the glass beads in the support film; and peeling the temporary support from the superposed matter in such a manner that the glass beads remain in the support film, said method being characterized in that a thin film containing a coupling agent is previously formed on the vapor-deposited metal film of the temporary support in which the glass beads are embedded and on which the vapor-deposited metal film is then formed, and then the support film is superposed thereon.

    • Ultraviolet luminescent retroreflective sheeting includes a retroreflective portion containing retroreflective elements and an ultraviolet luminescent portion to facilitate nighttime viewing by persons not located at or near a source of light being retroreflected by the retroreflective portion. At least part of the ultraviolet luminescent portion is provided as the bonding lines for bonding the transparent cover sheet to the support sheet to form a series of sealed cells in which the retroreflective elements, which may be of the encapsulated lens-type or the encapsulated cube-corner-type, are disposed. The ultraviolet luminescenct portion includes fluorescent agent which emits light when irradiation by ultraviolet irradiation. The ultraviolet luminescent retroreflective sheeting may be used in a display device, such as a roadside sign, in combination with a source of ultraviolet radiation means which may be formed integrally with the sheeting or spaced therefrom and which will, in operation, emit ultraviolet rays in the direction of the retroreflective sheeting.

    • A method for making retroreflective sheeting comprising the steps of placing a light-transmittable protective film on glass beads in a support sheet which consists of a binder layer and a reinforcing layer, and which is provided with retroreflective glass beads embedded in the binder layer, and thermoforming parts of the support sheet under heating and pressure so as to partially bond the binder layer of the support sheet to the protective film, which is characterized in that the reinforcing layer of the support sheet consists of a crosslinkable resin having shearing stress S in the range of 6.times.10.sup.6 -1.2.times.10.sup.7 dyne/cm.sup.2 before the thermoforming. A retroreflective sheeting made by this method has a high uniformity of the joint portions of the support sheet and protective film. Even when this retroreflective sheeting is used outdoors for a long period of time, troubles including peeling-off of the protective film do not substantially occur. This retroreflective sheeting can be utilized extensively as a road sign board, a license plate for a vehicle, a sign board for construction work and an advertisement board.
