    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide carbon nanotubes modified by polymers at a side surface and both terminals, and a method of modifying the surface of carbon nanotubes industrially favorably without imparting damages to a structure of the carbon nanotubes. SOLUTION: This polymer-modified nanoscale carbon tube is made by graft polymerizing a monomer such as a (meth)acrylate or a styrene on a reaction product of the nanoscale carbon tube and an azide compound represented by general formula (1) (wherein R 1 is H or a 1-4C alkyl group, R 2 is a carbonyl group (-CO-) or a group of -CO-C m H 2m -C 6 H 4 -(m=0-4), and X is a halogen atom) using a living radical polymerization method.
