    • A method of obtaining information concerning the content of an experimental sample. The method comprises:
      (i) irradiating a standard sample with X-rays and monitoring fluorescent X-rays emitted by the standard sample to obtain a correction coefficient I SID related to the intensity of the monitored X-rays. (ii) Irradiating the experimental sample under substantially the same experimental conditions as in step (i) with X-rays and monitoring fluorescent X-rays emitted by the experimental sample to obtain one or more experimental values I X , each experimental value being related to the intensity of the monitored X-rays corresponding to a particular analyte. (iii) Obtaining the information concerning the content of the experimental sample in accordance with an algorithm incorporating the experimental value I X , a calibration curve for the or each analyte and the correction coefficient I STD . The correction coefficient I STD is used to correct for any difference between the experimental conditions prevailing in steps (i) and (ii) and the calibration experimental conditions associated with the calibration curve.
