    • PURPOSE:To produce an impermeable carbon material having dimensional stability, strength, toughness and wear resistance by treating a skeleton material having functional groups on the surface with an aromatic cross-linking agent, combining the treated skeleton material with a specified thermosetting composition and carbonizing or graphitizing the resulting composite body. CONSTITUTION:The surface of a skeleton material having hydrogen, halogen, hydroxyl or other functional groups on the surface is treated with an aromatic cross-linking agent having one or more aromatic rings each having hydroxymethyl or halomethyl groups. A mixture of a condensed polycyclic aromatic compound having oxygen, sulfur, halogen or the like in the molecule having two or more rings with said aromatic cross-linking agent and an acid catalyst is prepd. or the mixture is brought into a reaction by heating to prepare a thermosetting intermediate reaction product. The treated skeleton material is combined with the thermosetting composition and the resulting composite body is plasticized by heating to 100-400 deg.C in an oxidizing or nonoxidizing atmosphere and molded into a prescribed shape by heat curing. The molded body is carbonized or further graphitized to obtain an impermeable carbon material.

    • PURPOSE:To obtain the titled construction of both high bond strength and heat and water resistances by coating an adherend having functional group on its surface with a halomethyl group-contg. aromatic crosslinking agent followed by heat treatment and then bonding using an adhesive comprising condensed polycyclic aromatic compound and aromatic crosslinking agent followed by heat curing. CONSTITUTION:The surface of an adherend having thereon such functional group(s) as hydrogen, halogen, hydroxyl group, carbonyl group, carboxyl group, aldehyde group, epoxy structure, lactone structure, ether structure or acid anhydride structure is coated with a surface-treatment agent consisting mainly of aromatic crosslinking agent made up of mono- or polycyclic aromatic ring carrying at lest two hydroxymethyl-halomethyl groups, etc., followed by heat treatment. An adhesive consisting of a thermosetting composition comprising condensed polycyclic aromatic compound, aromatic crosslinking agent and acid catalyst is either plasticized or liquefied followed by bonding to the adhered coated with said surface-treating agent and then heating at 100-400 deg.C in a (non)oxidative atmosphere to effect curing of the adhesive, thus obtaining the objective construction.

    • PURPOSE:To develop an impermeable carbon material which is small in shrinkage at the time of carbonization by subjecting a thermosetting intermediate product which is obtd. by a thermal reaction of a mixture composed of a condensed polycyclic arom. compd., specific arom. crosslinking agent and acid catalyst to thermal curing and molding, then to a carbonization or graphitization at a high temp. CONSTITUTION:The mixture composed of the condensed polycyclic arom. compd. which is a mixture of >=1 kinds of derivs. consisting of naphthalene, anthracene, etc., as main skeleton, heavy gravity oils of coal and petroleum, tar, pitch, and the oxide, sulfide, halide, etc., of said materials, the arom. crosslinking agent consisting of 1 or >=2 arom. rings contg. 1 or >=2 kinds of a hydroxy methyl group and halomethyl group, and the acid catalyst such as aluminum chloride, boron fluoride or phosphoric acid or the thermosetting intermediate product obtd. by the thermal reaction of such mixture is heated to 100-400 deg.C in an oxidative or nonoxidative atmosphere and is plasticized, by which the mixture is thermally cured and molded to the prescribed shape; thereafter the molding is carbonized or graphitized. The impermeable carbon material which is small in shrinkage at the time of carbonization and has an intricate shape is thus produced.
