    • In one aspect, a light-emitting surface includes a plurality of discrete, substantially flat light-emitting illumination devices arranged in a tiled configuration. Each device has a light-emitting area and an unilluminated area, the light-emitting area of a first device occluding at least a portion of the unilluminated area of a second, adjacent device. In another aspect, an illumination source includes a socket formed by the union of a sub-assembly platform and a light-guide element, and a discrete light source received in the socket. In another aspect, the light-guide element includes a concentration region proximate an in-coupling region opposite an out-coupling region, the concentration region directing multidirectional light from the in-coupling region toward the out-coupling region. In another aspect, a planar illumination area includes two light-guide elements, each with an out-coupling region. At least a portion of each out-coupling region overlaps with at least a portion of the other. The overlapping region emits a substantially uniform light output power.

    • In various embodiments, an illumination apparatus includes a substantially planar waveguide, a plurality of light sources embedded within the in-coupling region of the waveguide, and a film disposed over the out-coupling region of the waveguide. The film has a thickness less than approximately 100 µm and comprises or consists essentially of a photoluminescent material. The photoluminescent material converts a portion of light emitted by at least one of the light sources to a different wavelength. A surface of the out- coupling region has an average reflectivity of greater than approximately 90%. Light emitted by the light sources mixes with light converted by the photoluminescent material to form substantially white light, and the conversion efficiency of the illumination apparatus is greater than approximately 70%.
