    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system and method for introducing a delay to an optical signal transmitted using a continuously variable optical delay line. SOLUTION: A delay line comprises a holey fiber configured in a spiral layout, with one end of the fiber connected to a reflective fluid reservoir and with the other end connected to an input port. For the purpose of positioning a reflective fluid in the fiber by using a commutated technique that continuously moves the reflective fluid, a segmented piezoelectric actuator is employed. The signal received at the input port is routed through the holey fiber at an angle of incidence to achieve total internal reflection. The signal traverses toward the reflective fluid, and reflects back toward the input port after coming into contact with the surface of the fluid.
