    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device for detecting and analyzing chemical and biological aerosol. SOLUTION: A radiation beam is used to radiate a target cloud containing the aerosol. Radiation energy absorbed by the cloud is thermalized by collision energy transfer among molecules absorbing the radiation beam to generate heat. A wavelength of an electromagnetic beam is selected to be in resonance with absorption lines of water or an oxygen molecule in the cloud, or to be in resonance with absorption lines of a known target molecule in the heat generating cloud. Temperature elevation of the cloud increases radiation intensity of the molecule with respect to a background, and the detection of the target molecule in the aerosol is improved as a result thereof. A tracking telescope collects heat radiation generated by the radiation beam. A spectrometer receives the radiation from the cloud to generate a radiation spectrum. COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
