    • The present invention supports a protection path in a radio access network in order to continue communication between terminating nodes of the radio access network if a failure occurs with a communications path between the terminating nodes. A node may assume the functionality of a router, a base transceiver station, or a base station gateway. The establishment of the protection path utilizes the redundancy of connectivity (255, 257, 259) in the radio access network when routing the protection path in accordance with a service protection model. The protection path may be configured with a service protection model that is based on a quality of service model or on a separate protection model. With a quality of service being associated with a traffic class, the service profile indicates the quality of service for different types of services for a user as well as the quality of service that is provided by the protection path if a failure occurs with the communications path.

    • A system and method are provided for requesting a resource over at least one network. The system includes a terminal, a host and a network proxy. The terminal can send a first request for the resource over a first network and a second network. In turn, the host can receive the first request and send a first response, where the first request identifies the resource at a first location on the host. The network proxy, which can communicate with the host over the second network independent of the first network, can receive the first response from the host, and reformulate the first request into a second request that identifies the resource at a second location. The network proxy can send the second request to a host of the resource at the second location such that the host of the resource at the second location can respond to the second request.

    • An enhanced acknowledgement pacing device (500) and method for TCP connections is disclosed. The invention includes a link layer entity (528) for receiving data packets from a source and forwarding the data packets (540) to a forward data link, the link layer entity (528) storing the received data packets (540) in a data packet buffer (530) until the data packets depart the link layer entity (528) and are forwarded to the forward link and an acknowledgement pacing device (500), coupled to the link layer entity, for pacing acknowledgement packets (532) to be sent to the source in response to receiving the data packets (540) from the source (540). The acknowledgement pacing device (500) further includes an acknowledgement control unit (510) for monitoring congestion at the link layer entity (528) and generating a control signal for controlling the processing of acknowledgement packets (532) based upon whether congestion is occurring at the link layer entity (528), an acknowledgement packet buffer (534), coupled to the acknowledgement control unit (510), for storing acknowledgement packets (532) received from the acknowledgement control unit (510) and a scheduler (520), coupled to the acknowledgement control unit (510) and the acknowledgement buffer (534), the scheduler (520) releasing acknowledgement packets (532) to the source (540) based upon the control signal generated by the acknowledgement control unit (510).
