SOLUTION: The aluminum oxide thin film is prepared from an aluminum salt of an organic acid. The aluminum salt of the organic acid is obtained by reacting an aqueous solution containing a salt of a 5-10C straight-chain saturated monocarboxylic acid and having a pH value of 5-7 and an inorganic aluminum compound and then adjusting the pH of the reaction solution to 5-7 by adding a basic compound to the solution.

SOLUTION: The water-based coating liquid, which is used for forming a magnesium oxide thin film, contains (a) a magnesium salt of a 1-6C carboxylic acid, (b) a surfactant, (c) a polyhydric alcohol compound, and (d) a solvent consisting substantially of water. The coating liquid contains 5 to 50 wt.% of the magnesium carboxylate, 0.01 to 2.5 wt.% of the surfactant, and 0.05 to 40 wt.% of the polyhydric alcohol compound on the basis of the weight of the whole coating liquid. The magnesium carboxylate is contained in an amount equal to or more than the content of the alcohol compound. The total weight of the magnesium carboxylate and the alcohol compound is 80 wt.% or less based on the weight of the whole coating liquid.
