    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ultrasonic horn made of silicon nitride sintered compacts having enhanced fracture toughness and durability, which enables an ultrasonic treatment to be performed suitably, has improved wettability to molten aluminum, and efficiently micronizes aluminum cast structure. SOLUTION: The molten aluminum is irradiated with ultrasonic waves by the ultrasonic horn made of the silicon nitride sintered compacts produced by sintering composite powder containing the group 4A element in an amount of 1.0-10 pts.mass in terms of metals to an amount of 100 pts.mass of Si 3 N 4 powder in the Si 3 N 4 composite powder containing an ordinary sintering additive. The group 4A element or the compound of the same as well as the sintering additive such as Al 2 O 3 or Y 2 O 3 are added in producing the silicon nitride compacts so that the wettability to the molten aluminum is improved to enable the ultrasonic treatment to be performed suitably.     • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing aluminum alloy and casting equipment for uniformly fining a solidified structure by irradiation with ultrasonic wave.SOLUTION: The method for producing aluminum alloy uses casting equipment including: a header 1 disposed on a casting mold; a throttle plate 7 dividing the inside of the header and the inside of the mold; and an ultrasonic horn 3 which is provided so as to be dipped into a molten metal inside the header and is disposed coaxially with a molten metal tapping hole 8 provided at the central part of the throttle plate, wherein the casting equipment has a shape in which the molten metal tapping hole provided at the throttle plate has a truncated cone part whose diameter increases upward. In the method, the throttle plate is used which has the molten metal tapping hole having a dimension in the range of D≤D≤1.5Dand d/D=0.4 to 0.6 wherein: the diameter of the upper edge part of the truncated cone part is defined as D; the diameter of the lower edge part of the truncated cone part is defined as d; and the diameter of the tip of the ultrasonic horn is defined as D. The ultrasonic horn is installed at a position where the distance between its tip and the upper edge part of the throttle plate is 0.05 to 0.35 λ(λ denotes the wavelength in the alloy molten metal), and irradiation with ultrasonic wave is performed during the flowing of the molten metal through the inside of the header.
