    • The disk includes a disk recording surface, and the ramp includes a ramp. A head stack assembly of a hard disk drive includes an actuator arm and a suspension assembly attached to the actuator arm. The suspension assembly includes a first elongated region having a distal region and a planar surface for facing toward the disk recording surface; the first elongated region defines a longitudinal axis. The suspension assembly includes a second elongated region positioned adjacent to the distal region. The second elongated region includes a lift tab for engaging the ramp surface and is vertically offset from the planar surface such that the lift tab is vertically displaced further from the disk recording surface than the planar surface. The second elongated region further includes a curved lift tab supporting member for supporting the lift tab and positioned between the distal region and the lift tab. The lift tab supporting member includes a first region integrally formed with the distal region, a second region integrally formed with the lift tab, and a third region positioned between the first and second regions such that the second region is vertically offset from the first region. The third region defines a first trough for stiffening the supporting member. The distal region and the first region define a second trough for stiffening the distal and first regions. The second trough extends along the direction of the longitudinal axis and has an outer surface for facing toward the disk recording surface, the outer surface being vertically displaced closer toward the disk recording surface than the planar surface.

    • Disclosed herein are disk drives and mobile host devices that include a resetable shock sensor. A mobile host device may include a memory device configured to receive a shock event signal and a shock sensor. The shock sensor may be coupled to the memory device and is configured to generate the shock event signal. The shock sensor includes a fixed portion, and a movable portion responsive to shock events. The movable portion is configured to remain out of contact with the fixed portion until the mobile host device is subjected to a shock event greater than a predetermined magnitude and to contact and remain in contact with the fixed portion and to generate the shock event signal after the mobile host device is subjected to a shock event greater than the predetermined magnitude.

    • A disk drive includes a base, a spindle motor coupled to the base, a disk mounted on the spindle motor, a pivot assembly coupled to the base, and a head stack assembly. The head stack assembly includes an actuator body defining a bore for surrounding the pivot assembly, a supporting surface, and an actuator arm cantilevered from the actuator body and defining a longitudinal axis. The bore defines a pivot axis of the head stack assembly. The pivot assembly includes a stationary member coupled to the base, the stationary member having a length, and a rotatable member positioned on the supporting surface such that the rotatable member is between the stationary member and the supporting surface. The stationary member and the rotatable member define a projecting member and a recessed portion, the projecting member and the recessed portion interacting to allow the head stack assembly to pivot about the pivot axis. The projecting member defines a knife edge extending parallel to the length and facing in a direction substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis.

    • A disk drive includes an inner frame that has a disk drive base and a disk drive cover. A disk, mounted on a rotary spindle attached to the disk drive base, defines a disk outer periphery that protrudes into a first side opening of the inner frame. A head actuator is attached to the disk drive base and to the disk drive cover. An outer enclosure includes an extruded hollow cylinder with a cross-sectional shape that is a continuous and unbroken ring that is substantially rectangular, and that surrounds a cavity. The outer enclosure surrounds the disk drive base and the disk drive cover. During assembly, the inner frame may be slid lengthwise into an open end of the outer enclosure, and the outer enclosure may be hermetically sealed to enclose air or helium in the cavity.

    • The invention resides in a magnetic disk drive having a load beam assembly that forms a part of a head gimbal assembly and head stack assembly in a magnetic disk drive.The load beam assembly is uniquely mass balanced to prevent head slap by preventing an acceleration in the Z-direction from causing the transducer head to separate from the disk. The load beam assembly is preferably mass balanced by providing a load beam balancing member that is rigidly connected to the elongated load beam about a transverse axis of the hinge member. The balancing member can form the balancing mass or the balancing member can carry a discrete balancing mass. The balancing member may be divided into two halves that move on either side of the base portion, but is preferably comprised of a narrow, centrally located member that moves within an aperture formed in the base portion. The mass balanced load beam assembly can beneficially be manufactured from the same stainless steel sheets used to form conventional load beam assemblies. The balancing member may also be flexibly connected to the load beam by a spring hinge having a spring constant which, in concert with the mass of the balancing member, makes the balancing member oscillate in opposition to the disk to actively bias the head against the disk following a shock event.
