    • The present invention relates to a method for the production of plant oil from a non-algal plant cell suspension culture, the method comprising: (i) maintaining a cell suspension culture of oil-producing non-algal plant cells, in isolation from intact plants, in a suspension culture nutrient medium under controlled and sterile conditions, wherein the nutrient medium comprises carbohydrate as a source of energy, salts, vitamins, amino acids, minerals, plant growth hormones and other compounds, at a pH of less than 7.0 such that the cultured cells synthesise and secrete plant oil into the cell suspension culture nutrient medium; and (ii) extracting the thus secreted plant oil from the cell suspension culture nutrient medium.
