The method includes establishing a table of contents (TOC) on the HDD that contains entries for special O.S. programs. A pointer to the TOC is placed in non-volatile memory of the computer that is associated with the HDD, and when BIOS of the computer is prompted to load into memory one of the special O.S. programs, the pointer is accessed and used to locate the TOC, which in turn is accessed to load the special O.S. program.

摘要： Hacking a rental computer to use it beyond purchased rental time is prevented by plugging a time card with internal counter into a DIMM socket of the motherboard and encrypting the register locations of the time card with the private key of the motherboard to bind the time card to the motherboard. Thus, if the time card is not detected at boot or if it is removed during operation the computer is disabled. The counter counts down the rented time period as it receives clocking signals, and at the elapse of the purchased period disables the computer.

摘要： A system and method that rejuvenates a computer system is provided. The user uses the computer system that includes an operating system and applications for a first period of time creating data files and applying patches to the operating system and applications. An image is created of the primary drive and stored on a second nonvolatile storage area. In one embodiment, the second nonvolatile storage area is a hidden partition of a hard drive. The user continues using the system during a second period of time. When the computer system becomes sluggish, the primary drive is reformatted and the image is copied from the second nonvolatile storage area to the primary drive. In addition, patches and applications installed after the image was created are stored to the second nonvolatile storage area and reapplied and reinstalled on the primary drive after the image has been copied to the primary drive.

In the virtualized environment, one or more guest operating systems operate simultaneously with a privileged operating system. One of the guest operating systems identifies a device software update, such as a device driver or firmware update, corresponding to a hardware device that is attached to the computer system. The hypervisor is used to notify the privileged operating system of the device software update. When the privileged operating system is notified of the update, the privileged operating system uses one or more techniques to deny the guest operating systems access to the device. The privileged operating system then updates the device software update. After the device software update has been applied, the privileged operating system resumes access between the guest operating systems and the hardware device.
