    • A liquid crystal display device 100 according to the present invention is provided with a liquid crystal panel 20 in which a liquid crystal layer 23 is disposed between an active matrix substrate 21 and an opposite substrate 22 and a backlight 10 that irradiates the liquid crystal panel 20 with light. The liquid crystal panel 20 has a plurality of optical sensor elements 30 that detect the intensity of received infrared light, and the backlight 10 has an infrared LED (light source) 12 that emits infrared light. On a device surface 100a, an infrared light transmissive sheet (infrared light partially transmissive portion) 50 that partially transmits infrared light is provided. The optical sensor elements 30 detect an input position from outside by detecting infrared light reflected from an inputting object such as a finger or the like placed on the device surface 100a. This way, an optical sensor integrated liquid crystal display device that can clearly distinguish whether or not an inputting object such as a finger or the like is touching the device surface can be achieved.

    • A liquid crystal display device (display device) (100) of the present invention includes a display panel (20) provided with a plurality of light sensor elements, and has an area sensor function in which the plurality of light sensor elements detect an image on a surface of the liquid crystal display device, so as to determine a location of an input from outside. The liquid crystal display device includes (i) a front side polarizing plate (40) provided on or above a surface of the display panel (20) which surface is on an image display surface side and (ii) a λ/2 phase plate (50b) and a λ/4 phase plate (50a) which are stacked in this order on the front side polarizing plate (40) so that an optical axis (a slow axis) of the λ/2 phase plate (50b) and an optical axis (a slow axis) of the λ/4 phase plate (50a) intersect with each other. The phase plate formed by stacking the λ/2 phase plate (50b) and the λ/4 phase plate (50a) is referred to as a broadband λ/4 phase plate (50). This makes a light sensor equipped display device which (i) prevents a reflection of light coming from a display image and (ii) allows determination of an input location with higher accuracy.

    • A liquid crystal display device is provided with a liquid crystal panel 20 including a plurality of optical sensors, a white backlight 31, and an infrared backlight 32. The infrared backlight 32 is turned on and off with predetermined timings. One part of the optical sensors detect light at the time of turn-on of the infrared backlight 32, and the other part of the optical sensors detect light at the time of turn-off of the infrared backlight 32. One part of the optical sensors is specified as operating optical sensors. A drive circuit of the liquid crystal panel 20 includes a black insertion unit 11, and drives the liquid crystal panel 20 so as to partially perform black display corresponding to the operating optical sensors. This widens an effective region of the optical sensor included in the display device.
