    • A backlight device wherein LEDs which are arranged side by side at a first arrangement interval (P1) are provided to each LED unit. The LED units are mounted to a flexible board at a second arrangement interval. A light guide plate is disposed in such a manner that an end surface thereof is spaced from the LEDs by a distance (H). The light guide plate is disposed so as to satisfy the following relationship: first arrangement interval (P1)≦distance (H)≦second arrangement interval (P2). Specifically, the LEDs are arranged side by side in such a manner that the first arrangement interval (P1) is not less than 0.1 mm but not greater than 3 mm and the second arrangement interval (P2) is not less than 5 mm but not greater than 15 mm. The light guide plate is disposed in such a manner that the distance (H) is not less than 1 mm but not greater than 7 mm.

    • An optical unit for use in a backlight device of a liquid crystal display apparatus, includes a light-diffusing component to diffract incident light and a light-collecting component having multiple microlenses each having a shape of a hemisphere- or semi-oval-like protrusion on a light-emitting side of the light-collecting component. The components are provided in this order on an optical path of light emitted from a light source of the backlight device. The light-diffusing component includes a diffusing section having a first surface that faces the light source and an opposite second surface, and first and second prisms provided on the first and second surfaces, respectively. Each prism has a cross section like a teeth of a saw. Each first prism has a summit protruding towards the light source. Each second prism has a summit protruding in an opposite direction of the first prism.

    • A television receiver is disclosed which is designed to display two types of input picture signals, for example, an NTSC signal and a VGA signal on at least two display areas of one image screen simultaneously. The television receiver includes an auxiliary coil and a switching circuit. The auxiliary coil is operable in first and second operation modes. The first operation mode is such that an electron beam is scanned in sequence along the scanning lines to reproduce the VGA signal having a horizontal scanning frequency of substantially twice that of the NTSC input signal, while the second operation mode is such that the scanning line intervals are controlled so as to scan the electron beam two times along the same scanning line to reproduce the consecutive two of line signals of the frequency-converted NTSC signal which are formed by the same portion of the NTSC input signal. The switching circuit is responsive to an area signal indicative of the display area of at least one of the frequency-converted NTSC signal and the VGA signal to switch between the first and second operation modes of the auxiliary coil for displaying high-quality images on the different display areas of the image screen.
