    • A method of the present invention includes the steps of forming an amorphous semiconductor layer on an insulative surface, adding a catalyst element capable of promoting crystallization to the amorphous semiconductor layer and then performing a first heat treatment so as to crystallize the amorphous semiconductor layer, thereby obtaining a crystalline semiconductor layer, performing a first gettering process to remove the catalyst element from the semiconductor layer, and performing a second gettering process that is different from the first gettering process to remove the catalyst element from the semiconductor layer. The first gettering process includes removing at least large masses of a semiconductor compound of the catalyst element present in the crystalline semiconductor layer. The second gettering process includes moving at least a portion of the catalyst element remaining in the crystalline semiconductor layer so as to form a low-catalyst-concentration region in the crystalline semiconductor layer, the low-catalyst-concentration region having a lower catalyst element concentration than in other regions.

    • Each of a plurality of wireless terminals connected to a wireless LAN base station notifies the base station of an address for receiving data by one-to-many communication from the base station when said wireless terminal executes a program using the one-to-many communication in the wireless LAN. The base station records by relating the address notified from the wireless terminal with an address of the wireless terminal for one-to-one communication. When the base station receives one-to-many communication data to be sent out the wireless LAN, the base station converts an address of destination of the one-to-many communication data into the one-to-one communication address corresponding to said destination and transmits the data whose destination address has been converted into the one-to-one communication address.

    • A wireless LAN base station scans frequency channels available for use in a wireless LAN, detects a beacon signal of a near-by wireless LAN base station, and thereby the number of the near-by base stations in the wireless LAN is notified. The notified number of the near-by base stations is recorded in a network table. A wireless LAN base station which should determine a radio channel in the next is determined, based on the recorded number of the near-by base stations, using a wireless LAN base station having a smaller number of the near-by base stations as the starting point of radio channel determining process, after the wireless LAN base station at the starting point determines a radio channel. By repeatedly carrying out the above-described operation, the radio channels of the whole wireless LAN are automatically determined.

    • This invention encodes an image mixed of a character or line-drawing image and a natural image. An extraction unit extracts the color of a pixel, which constitutes a high-frequency component, from the input image data as an extracted color and generates identification information indicating whether each pixel in the image data is a pixel of an extracted color or non-extracted color. A replacement unit replaces a pixel value of an extracted color with an average value of non-extracted colors. Using a window having a size of 2×2 pixels, a reducing unit generates one pixel from the window after replacement. If even one non-extracted-color pixel exists in the window, the average value of non-extracted colors within the window is determined to be a pixel value of the reduced image. A packing unit concatenates the extracted color, the result of lossless-encoded identification information and lossy-encoded data of the reduced image.
