    • In a digital broadcasting network, a mobile terminal receives hierarchical ESG data relating to available broadcast programs adjacent network areas. The terminal is operable whilst receiving a first program from a transmitter in a first network area for detecting a need for handover to a second network area, and for then determining from the ESG data if the same program is available in the second network area. If it is, the terminal then receives the program from a transmitter in the second network area. Otherwise, it determines one or more programs which are similar to the first program, and presents them on a display for selection by a user. This involves determining which programs have an identifier in common with the first program. The identifier can be any one or more of a program identifier, a service identifier, a channel identifier, a category identifier and a genre identifier, for example.

    • A broadcast service for transmission to mobile terminals 10a-10c in a cellular communication system comprises a series of burst B1-B5 of data packets in a transport stream 7. Where the available data transmission rates in cells Cl, C2 are unequal, the transport stream 7a for transmission to the cell C1 with the higher data transmission rate is modified by incorporating additional payload L1-L5 in each burst in the series, for example by appending the additional payload to each burst or by interleaving the burst data and additional payload (Figure 7) so that a time interval t; between adjacent bursts B1-B5 is the same in both cells C1, C2. Therefore, start times of the transmission of each burst B1-B5 in both cells C1, C2 are synchronised, i.e. the transmission of each burst B1-B5 begins simultaneously in both cells C1 or a time interval to between the start of transmission of each burst in cells C1, C2 is fixed (Figure 5). This allows a mobile terminal 1Ob operating in a selective data reception mode to continue receiving a service without disruption when moving across a cell boundary 11. The incorporation of the additional payload may be performed by a digital broadcast head-end 26 or by an apparatus 13 associated with a transmitter 8 serving a cell C1.

    • The present invention provides methods and apparatus for a wireless system broadcasting a plurality of data packets to a wireless terminal as the wireless terminal performs a handover in order to support a service. Corresponding data packets are sent in bursts from base' stations to the wireless terminal. The data packets are encoded with a forward error correcting (FEC) code, thus generating encoded symbols. When the wireless terminal executes a handover from the first base station to the second base station, some of the encoded symbols (that are contained in the bursts of data packets) may be lost or may be corrupted, as result of practical network considerations and radio propagation characteristics. Consequently, the wireless terminal decodes the received data packets in accordance with the FEC code so that missing or corrupted encoded symbols may be determined.
