The wireless communication network may be embodied as a mesh network that includes a plurality of mesh points, and the first device and the at least one second device may each be a mesh point.

According to an example embodiment, a network performance may be measured within a wireless network 102. A variety of parameters may be measured at a wireless node 106 to determine a network performance. In addition, it may be determined 220 whether the network performance has reached a degraded performance threshold. A frame is transmitted via the wireless network 102. If the network performance has reached the degraded performance threshold, the frame may be transmitted using a Request-to-Send/Clear-to-Send (RTS/CTS) protection. In another example embodiment, a frame may be transmitted 230 using RTS/CTS protection if an estimated transmission time for the frame exceeds a transmission time threshold.

    • The present invention provides a new and unique method and apparatus for communicating information between two nodes, points or terminals in a wireless local area network (WLAN), where a variable multicast and/or broadcast listening interval and associated signalling is allowed between the two nodes, points or terminals in the wireless LAN network. The two nodes, points or terminals include an access point (AP) or other suitable network node or terminal and a station (STA) or other suitable network node or terminal in the WLAN. The AP and the STA can indicate its capability to support a flexible multicast and broadcast listening interval by using new fields in Beacon and Probe Response frames and in (Re)Association Request Frames. The multicast and broadcast service is setup by using Multicast and Broadcast Service Setup signalling.

    • Various embodiments are disclosed relating to beacon transmissions in wireless networks. A wireless node may receive a beacon (312, 314) from one or more wireless nodes (MP1, MP2, MP3). The receiving node may generate and transmit a beacon map to other wireless nodes in the network. The beacon map may provide information relating to one or more of the received beacons, such as a time stamp or other time information for the beacon and the originating wireless node for the beacon, such as an address of the originating wireless node. The beacon map may be transmitted upon request or within a beacon, or within another message. In another example embodiment, a beacon map may be received at a receiving wireless node, including information relating to beacons from one or more other wireless nodes. A status of at least one of the beacons may be determined based upon the beacon map.
