    • A system and method for transmitting content such as electronic mail from a sending electronic device to a recipient electronic device. When content is to be sent, it is first determined whether the sending electronic device possesses a reference content item that has redundancy with the current content item. If so, it is determined whether the recipient electronic device includes a copy of the reference content item. If the recipient electronic device possesses a copy of the reference content item, a compression algorithm is used to compress the current content item, with the compression being based upon the reference content item existing in both the sending electronic device and the recipient electronic device. The compressed current content item is then transmitted to the recipient device, where it is decompressed and made available.

    • A method and device for multiplexing a stream of packets containing uncompressed and compressed packets. In a compressed packet, an identification bit pattern is inserted between the compressed payload data and the transport header so that a decompressor can determine whether the packet is compressed based on the presence of the identification bit pattern. Because the compressed packet carries the original transport header of a packet with minor modification, an intermediate node on the path of packet can see information in the transport header. In contrast, the transport header in an IPComp packet is part of IP payload and thus compressed.

    • The present invention concerns methods for efficiently supporting Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) on the Forward Packet Data Channel (F PDCH) in CDMA 2000 1xEV-DV systems. Active speech in VoIP is encoded using, for example enhanced variable rate codec (EVRC), which produces 171, 80 and 16 bits per 20 ms of speech for Rate 1, Rate %2 and Rate 1/8, respectively. However, about 60% of the time a user is inactive during a speech session, so an inordinate amount of system bandwidth is comprised of rate 1/8 VoIP packets. In one embodiment of the present invention the apparatus of the present invention identifies the Rate 1/8 voice frame packets and discards them. In another embodiment of the present invention, the apparatus of the present invention identifies the Rate 1/8 voice frame packets and selects some of them for further transmission. In both embodiments the efficiency of channel utilization is increased since the amount of channel band width used to communicate relatively little information, e.g., gaps of silence, is decreased.

In lossy mode, the text string is parsed to determine its case sensitivity so that a search for finding a match for the text string in a reference source is based on the case sensitivity. Alternatively, the case configuration of the characters in the text string is transformed into a target case, and a case-sensitive search is performed to find a match for the case-transformed text string. In lossless mode, a case-insensitive search is performed for finding a match for the text string regardless of its case sensitivity, and a case-info-element is attached to the compressed string so that the compressed string can be reconstructed based on the case-info-element.
